Books Received At EP Library
Eagle Point Mrs. Jessie
Tycer, Eagle Point librarian,
said she would like everyone
in the community to drop in
and note the new books and
to become acquainted with
the many opportunities avail
able in the local library.
A new Viewmaster, for use
in the library only, has been
added with slides covering
most of the western states,
Hawaii, Alaska, South Amer
ica and numerous wild ani
mals available at the present
time. Slides will be rotated
from time to time with spe
cific ones available upon re
quest. The 1960 edition of Comp
ton's pictured enclyclopedia
has been added to the set of
America nnas for the adults.
The Worldbook encyclo
pedias are the only ones that
can be removed from the li
brary but a large table is sup
plied within the library for
use.
Among the new magazines
added recently are ""Chil
dren's Activity" and "Seven
teen" which brings the maga
zine circulation to the level
of all ages.
A number of Boy Scout and
Cub Scout manuals for both
leaders and boys have been
added to the lending library
along with a large number
of the merit pamphlets need
ed for their rank advance
ments. Mrs. Tycer announced that
it is possible to borrow a book
in Medford and return it in
Eagle Point if it is more con
venient. The same card is used
at both libraries and specific
requests may be obtained
within a week now as the
head librarian visits here each
Friday.
CP PTA Announces
Valentine's Sale

association ways and means
chairman, announced that per
sons furnishing baked goods
for the PTA Valentine's sale
may leave the product at the
home-making room in Central
Point Junior High school on
Friday afternoon or Saturday
morning.
Parents are asked to bear
in mind that special desserts
for Valentine's Day may be
purchased at this sale. This
drive was prompted by the
need of the District 6C
Mothersingers for the music
they will need to participate
in the PTA convention to be
held in Medford this year.
Any money beyond the price
of the music will go into the
PTA fund.

Wild Reports Drum Up
Fear of Wild "Killers'
The voice over the airways
was calm but the message
it brought was widely sensa
tional. In language designed
to produce startling or thrill
ing impressions, it reported
"poisonous scorpions and
venomous tarantulas are at
tacking the people."
This soul-stirring news re
port sent tingles of apprehen
sion down the spines of . the
listeners. Nearly every day
something equally ridiculous
blares forth. ;
Unusual Report
One instance, a short time
ago, received an unusual and
undeserved coverage which
lasted several days. - There
was a leopard loose and over
an area of hundreds of
square miles thousands of
people cowered in false ter
ror. The airways were filled
with dire warnings, one of
which cautioned "all women
and children remain indoors
after dark and all doors and
windows kept locked." Some

By the end of three or four
days the hunt for the escaped
cat became highly organized.
The tension mounted. The
situation was reported to be
more dangerous with every
passing hour as by now the
"ferocious beast" having had
notLs io eat would be fran
tic for want . of . food, there
fore doubly dangerous. The
calm voice over the air re
ported, "hundreds of men,
grim-faced and determined,
armed with rifles,- were comb
ing every wild area.".,
So-Called 'Killer . .
This so-called "killer"
whose escape upset a large
area . had conducted himself
in no manner to justify all
the excitement. The only
lulling the jungle . cat . had
ever accomplished, was.a few
chickens that haa been placed
in the cage for him to eat. Yet
in a matter of hours and a
half dozen million words, all
most ill advised and all de
signed to create a sensational
event, a terrible, blood-thirsty
monster was created. .
We reach this state of silly
fear because we have read or
seen depicted in the movies,
ridiculous events, of the ter
rible "wild beasts" that are
pictured as creatures whose
sole intent and purpose in
life is to attract some helpless
human. ' We have all read of
our ancestors fighting wild
animals, when imagined dan
gers '.lurked .. behind.-, every
tree. Actually those ancestors
of ours were in little danger
of wild animals.' "
If you stop and think about
it a' minute you will see how
silly and stupid' are all our
fears. The man who will go
out and catch this "savage
beast'- will probably use a
short piece of rope, a piece
of canvas or a net provided
he gets to the animal before
some trigger-happy guy with
a gun has .a chance to fill the
poor escapee full of lead.
