Madeline F. - I am a hap pily married woman in my 30s with four young chil dren. My only serious prob lem dates back to childhood. I was pretty badly scarred around the face and neck as the result of an accident. I suffered terrioly from my self consciousness about this in childhood and as a teen ager. Fortunately, I met my husband and was married be fore I had a chance to start feeling, really sorry for my self. Frankly, I can't under stand how he fell in love with me. Anyway, I still suffer ag onies when I see someone staring at me. I have tried every trick of cosmetics but nothing helps much. At last I've found a doctor who be lieves he can do something through a series of operations. It will be awfully expensive, but I want it. My husband doesn't want me to do it. Yet I often feel I must be repul sive to him. Daniel F. -1 don't begrudge Madeline the money for this thing and I think she knows that. The doctor says him self he can't guarantee more than a slight improvement. I have always felt that she is ridiculously self-conscious about this thing. I don't even see the scars most of the time, and when I do I like them. That may sound silly, but they are so much a part of her I think I'd miss them if they weren't there. I have done my best to re assure Madeline and build up her self-confidence, but every now and then she gets terribly depressed and says she hates to go out among people and that I must be ashamed of her. Of course, if the oper ation would make her feel much better I would let her have it. The Council: All the ex perts in mental health are in agreement that few people who consider themselves un attractive are actually so. Usually .they harp upon some feature that others wouldn't notice and some actually call the attention of others to this feature. Many are so self- conscious that they treat oth ers coldly out of fear of get ting hurt. Then, they inter pret their lack of love or mends as a sign of their physi cal repulsiveness. We think that the most im portant thing for this kind of person is a change from with in. However, there is no ques tion that an outward change is often helpful in bringing about that change from with in. When the individual feels fee of the bad feature or blemish that has bothered him all his life, he will suddenly turn a happy, friendly face toward the world and get the reassuring response of friend ly affection in return. Madeline is apparently of a very uneven disposition. She must have a certain amount of outgoing, unself-conscious warmth to have secured the love and loyalty of a fine hus band. But her spells of de pression and her fear that she is repulsive to her husband in dicate that her scars are more than skin deep. There is a deep reservoir of fear and shame beneath the surface. We cannot promise Made line that the operations would wipe this away. It might help.
