Address: Box 521 129 North Oakdale Avenue Medford, Oregon MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. B Friday, Feb. 12, 1960 Proper Steering Important in Car Medford's Chief of Police Charles P. Champlin has come up with an alternate defini tion of a one-armed bandit. Usually thought of as slot machines which rob pocket books, a one-armed bandit, according to Champlin, is also an apt term for drivers who use one arm to control their cars. These bandits, who can steal someone's life, are eas ily identifiable because they drive with one arm draped over the back of the seat or holding up the roof, he said. By using both hands on the wheel, preferrably in the 10-2 position a driver can have the most effective control over his car. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the 10-2 po sition, or a similar hold, Champlin suggested that driv ers go to a safe area and com pare that position with driv ing with one hand on the wheel or both hands at the bottom of the wheel, and they will readily see how much more control the 10-2 position gives. Failure to steer correctly may mean just enough loss of steering ability, he said, to make the difference between life and death in an emer gency.
