Mrs. K.L. - My son-in-law beats his son. Betly E. - She shouldn't in terfere. Mrs. K.L. - I am very much concerned about my 4-year-old grandson and his relation ship with his father. I feel that my daughter should do something drastic about what is happening in her home, but she tells me it isn't my busi ness. The little boy is a bright, affectionate child who adores his father. But his father, who is a huge, strong man hits this little boy. I have never be lieved in punishing children in this way and it kills me to see it. These spankings or slaps he gives Timmy when he misbehaves are no love taps. They make the child scream in pain. I have seen Timmy wince when he looks at his father after he has done something wrong. To me this is horrible. Nobody ever lifted a hand to a child of mine and they all grew up to be fine men and women. Betty E. - When Mother is around things get much worse in our household. She looks around for things to criticize, I get nervous and take it out on Timmy and then he gets upset and starts misbehaving. I don't approve of hitting either and I have tried to have this out with Ed, but he replies that there is no harm in it. He says that he and his brothers were spanked regu larly for misbehavior and it helped them grow up into good citizens. They never held it against their father. - Ed feels that Mother spoils Timmy dreadfully. When she is in the house she sees to it that he gets everything he slants. He has gotten into the habit of whining to Granny anytime we say no to him. I originally confided to Mother that I was upset about the whippings, but now I'm sorry 1 ever said anything. She shouldn't interfere in our home. The Council: We don't par ticularly like or recommend the hitting of children, but we don't think it's the worst of parental sins. Mrs. K.L. should know that if the child "adores" his father, he is set ting more good than bad from him. It is entirely likely that his screams of pain are great ly exaggerated. As Betty now realizes, she behaved unwisely in discuss ing this matter with her Mother. She was, in a sense appealing io ner mother as she did when a child - to save her from a situation that left her feeling helpless. Her moth er has responded to her ap peal for help, but now Betty resents the fact that she and her husband are, in effect, being told that they are mere children incapable of handling their parental responsibilities satisfactorily. Most grandparents hate to see their grandchildren dis ciplined and often feel that the parents should show more judgment and patience. But interference in these personal family matters is worse then useless. The parents must act in accordance with the dic tates of their own nature and their own ideas. All of them make some mistakes, but if they love their children and have a strong sense of respon sibility, it is unlikely the mis- SETTY'S MARKET 1870 Stewart Ave. lO-oi. JewellDocumenfs From University Are Published Eugene - Two of the most important Oregon Historical documents in the University of Oregon library, the Robert Newell "Memoranda," have been published by the Cham poeg Press, Portland. Editor for the documents was Dor othy Johansen of Reed col lege. During his long career as a fur trader, overland guide, Oregon settler, and member of the Provisional Govern ment, Robert Newell, familiar ly known as "Doc", produced two important historical rec ords that have been preserved. One is his "Memorandum of Travle (sic) in the Territory of Missourie," in which New ell the fur trader and over land guide kept an account of his wanderings. He was associated with all the great names of the fur trade in the Rocky Mountains during the 1820s and 1830s, from Jedediah Smith to Joe Meek. In 1840 he drove the first wagon from Ft. Hall to the Columbia over the Ore gon trail. The Indian fights, trapper rendezvous, and the names of the mountain men in Newell's account form an important link in Oregon's historic past. Second Document In 1848 Doc Newell was one of the three men appointed to parley with the Indians on the upper Columbia after the Whitman massacre. The trip up the Columbia, and his deal ings with the Indians are the subject of his second impor t a n t document, "Memoran dum of Travle to the Kayuse War." Evidently intended as the basis for his official report, this document describes the chaotic condition of frontier military organization, com ments on the attitude of the Indians, and passes contem porary judgments of the Whit man massacre. Newell, who became Joe Meek's brother - in - law, was not highly educated, but liter ate enough to keep accurate, full records, and a seasoned frontiersman, whose opinions were and are important. The fur trade memorandum came to the University of Ore gon library in 1939 as part of a purchase of early Oregon documents. The Cayuse War memorandum is a gift from the late Robert W. Sawyer of Bend. Dorothy Johansen has placed both the documents, to gether with a third from the Library Association of Port land, in their proper historical perspective, and has supplied the necessary additional his torical information concern ing events and persons men tioned. The volume is printed by Lawton Kennedy of San Fran cisco in an addition of 750 copies. Propaganda Blowout In Cuba Predicted Washington -(UFB- American officials disclosed Tuesday they are keeping a wary eye on preparations for a Communist-blessed propaganda blow out in Cuba which they ex pect to erupt in a torrent of anti-U.S. abuse.
