Meanwhile, the California Collegiate Athletic associa tion continued to shine in con tests against the supposedly bigger-time West Coast Ath letic Conference. San Diego State upset Pepperdine, 74-71 at Los Angeles. Bernie Finley of the winners had a big night as he cashed in on 12 of 18 shots and 34 points. Sacramento State rolled over San Fernando State, 81 57, with Al Smith hitting 16 markers. The busy-handed but light punching Rodriguez is expect ed to be a solid 3-1 favorite over his heavier-hitting op ponent, who has sent two re cent foes to the hospital with his powerful, two-fisted at tack. SPORTS Ohio Slate Three Games In Front Chicago - (UPD - Ohio State pulled three games in front of what's left of the Big Ten basketball race today and Il linois joined a lengthening list of also-rans who have lost at least three games in con ference play. The unbeaten "and appar ently unstoppable Buckeyes improved their league record to 8-0 Monday night with a 106-69 romp over Wisconsin, which went down to its sev enth loss of the year. The victory left the Buck eyes with a three-game edge over Purdue which slipped into second place. The onrush ing Bucs can now lose three of their remaining six games and still be assured of a tie, since ever challenger has lost at least three games. Michigan State Wins Illinois was a 4-2 team un til Monday night but Michi gan State staged a last-minute charge to win, 78-77, and dump the Illini into third place. Purdue took advantage of luckless Michigan for the sec ond time in 10 days for its third straight victory, 79-65, and ease into second place Northwestern, which nosed out Minnesota n the final sec onds with a 62-61 victory at j Evanston, 111., two weeks ago, turned in a repeat perform- ance when a last-ditch rally in the final eight minutes pro duced a 66-64 triumph over the Gophers at Minneapolis. Rose Bowl Pact Aired Champaign, 111. (UPD The Big Ten has all but officially turned up its nose at renew ing Rose Bowl competition on a contract basis. Illinois, casting a key "bal lot on the issue, voted Mon day against sending a Big Ten team to the Rose Bowl. The formal vote on the bowl won't come until next month at the conference's winter meeting at Columbus, Ohio. But Illinois, which had been expected to favor renew al of the bowl pact, was the fourth to vote no. Northwestern Opposed Northwestern opposed the contract in earlier balloting and was expected to do so again, joining Illinois, Ohio State, Minnesota and Wiscon sin in the anti-bowl faction. Michigan State already has voted in favor of renewal and four others, Indiana, Purdue, Iowa and Michigan - were expected to align themselves as the pro-bowl schools, thus bringing the vote to a 5-5 deadlock at the Columbus meeting. A tie vote would only au thorize continuance of the current league rule on the bowl which permits a team to accept a Rose Bowl bid, but does not commit the confer ence to sending an annual representative. Chessman Lawyers Prepare Appeal San Francisco-OJPD - Attor neys for Caryl Chessman to day prepared a 14th appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court in an effort to stay the convict-author's execution, sched uled for Feb. 19. The high court has reject ed 13 previous appeals on be half of the 38-year-old Chess man, who was convicted in Los Angeles in 1948 on 17 charges of robbery, kidnap ing and rape. Attorney George. T. Davis said he planned to file a mo tion with the Supreme Court by Thursday for an original writ of habeas corpus and stay of execution. He added that by Monday he would ask the California Supreme Court to exercise its pardoning power, which in cludes the power to commute a sentence. MUSIC MANAGER DIES New York-OJPD - Andrew Schulhof, 65, a music man ager who had managed such figures as Sir Thomas Bee cham, Leopold Stokowski, and Earnest Ansermet, died Monday. FUN WITH SP0JTS PHOTOS' 'iS&GEttv CJg College Match Set Grants Pass - A college inter collegiate wrestling match between the Univer sity of Oregon and Cal Poly will be sponsored by Grants Pass high school at 8 p.m., Feb. 18 in the Memorial gymnasium there, accord ing to Jesse Loffer, Grants Pass athletic director. A preliminary match will feature Grants Pass varsity grapplers vs. Medford start ing at 7 p.m. This is prob ably the first intercolle giate wrestling match in southern Oregon involving schools of this size, Loffer said. Grants Pass high school is contacting the various Jackson county schools to see if their pupils want tickets, Loffer added. Pinson Now Highest Paid Soph By United Press International Vada Pinson, the rookie the experts forgot when Willie McCovey came along, has signed a 1960 contract that undoubtedly makes him the highest paid sophomore in the Cincinnati Reds' history. The 21-year-old native of Memphis, Tenn., agreed to an estimated $16,000 as a reward for a season in which he batted .316, hit 20 homers, drove in 84 runs and set team marks of 131 runs, 47 doubles and 21 stolen bases. Under ordinary circum stances those figures would have made Pinson the Nation al League's rookie of the year but the honor went instead to McCovey, sensational San Francisco Giant first base man who hit .356 in 52 games Other Signings Tom Acker, 6-foot, 4-inch, 220-pound righthanded pitch er, signed with the Kansas City Athletics. Reserve infielder Mel Roach and relief pitcher Bob Hartman brought the Milwau kee Braves' satisfied list to 19. Second-baseman Sparky Anderson, who hit .218 as a rookie, and outfielder Bobby Del Greco, .286 with Buffalo of the International League, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Catcher Russ Nixon and first baseman Norm Cash agreed ta terms with the Cleveland Indians leaving only home run slugger Rocky Colavito and pitcher Gary Bell unsigned. Benfon Considers Welfare Work Plan Corvallis-OJPl) - The Benton County Welfare commission will be asked to consider a work program for employable men on county welfare rolls, the County Court has an nounced. Commissioners Walter Schmidt and Melvin Hawkins said they would ask the com mission to consider such a pro gram at its Feb. 23 meeting. They said it would be similar to one recently started in Polk county. It would have all able bodied men drawing welfare funds work on public improvement projects. London-flJPD - Britian this year has 20,000 more residents of colored or Asian extraction than it did last year, the gov ernment announced Monday. More than 220,000 non-whites now live in Britain, which until recent years had no "racial problem." Net immi gration to Britain in 1959 in cluded 16,000 West Indians and 3,000 Indians and Pakis tanis. The Champs picked up top points for attendance with 16 men on hand and for total score with 635. They took sec ond with their 230 in the high five contention. . Charles Skeeters' and Louis Biden's Prospect Loggers are now second with 27 points. They got eight last Sunday. The Loggers tied for second in attendance with the Klock er Printery Devils. Each bad 14 shooters. The Loggers were second high in total score with 557. Printers Third Jim Grigsby's Printer's Devils of the Klocker firm are third with 15 points, gaining seven in the last shoot. Milo Barnes' Century Sport ing Goods team is fourth with five points and Max. Weston's motel Longshots have yet to pick up a point.. The Printer's Devils had 547 total score, . the Sports men 466 and the Longshots 372. Barnes' team topped the list in the high five category with 231. Argentina Looks For Submarine Buenos Aires-(UPD - Argen tine ships and planes are maintaining a round-the-clock "death watch" over the Nuevo Gulf area, where an unidenti fied submarine was reported last week, it was announced today. Navy Secretary Gaston Cle ment said targets tentatively identified as the submarine had been attacked "several times" with bombs and depth charges. He added, however, that there is no assurance that the submarine is still in the gulf. New Haven, Conn. - fUPD- Sen. Jacob K. Javits (R-N.Y.) said Monday night that civil rights "may well emerge as the most decisive domestic is sue" of this year s president ial campaign. Javits also toid Yale University students he was "confident" a compromise on proposed civil rights leg islation would be worked out and that "prospects are good" that Congress will strength en civil tights laws during the current session. Ogorek. a 6-5. 210-pound tiger on the boards, currently is ripping the nets at a 20.5 per game pace as the Chief tains have engineered a 10-7 slate so far. A senior in the school of i commerce and finance, Ogorek is the last link with the Elgin Baylor five.that lost the NCAA title to Kentucky in the spring of 1958, Tough on Boards Ogorek is a workhorse re bounder who battles off the boards for keeps and current ly has hauled in slightly bet ter than 10 rebounds per game. "Don is a fearless driver," says his coach Vince Cazzetta. When he sails down the lane he means business and lots of times is good for the three point play. Ogorek got off to a great start this year with a 30-point night when the Chiefs lost their opener to Utah State 85 73. Then he was hit with a flu bug and couldn't perform up to par. However, he has hit his stride again and has averaged close to 30 points per game in the last five outings. For example, he dropped in 32 markers in Seattle's 85-67 tri umph over St. Mary's. Against Bradley, one of the nation's best, he managed 17 against a defense that was geared to stop him.
