Monday, Feb. 8, 1960 COMPLETEFACTORY .NJRCHA y2 Russians Stress Faith in Science, Attache Believes SAMS Y8tJ BRAY'S Ardsley-on-Hudson, N.Y. -(Science Service) - "The So viet citizen, government and Nikita Khrushchev have more faith in science and technol ogy than in Marxism," Dr. John Turkevich, who will serve this summer as acting U.S. scientific attache to the USSR, believes. This change of faith may hold a key to peace, he said. The Princeton University chemist spoke at a seminar for science writers here, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. He said the Soviet people do not tell visitors the USSR will better the U.S. because Communist philosophy but because of scientific advances. "Thank God for that," Dr Turkevich said. Great Wave of Respect Dr. Turkevich's father, an immigrant from Russia, is an American archbishop of the Russian Orthodox church. The chemist said the USSR's proletariat revolution did not liquidate the intellectual in fluence. In fact, today the sci entist is riding a great wave ' of respect, Dr. Turkevich said. Scientists foster East-West exchanges that may aid peace, . he said, while blind faith in Communist ideology prevent ed Western ideas from getting into the USSR. - Dr. Turkevich estimates he talked to 40,000 people. - in cluding Premier Khrushchev -while lecturing at the re cent U.S. exposition in Mos cow. He speaks Russian flu ently. Affection for Americans He said he found "tremen dous affection and admira tion for the people . of the United States" among Soviet citizens. "Some of this admir ation stems from our scien tific and technological ad vances." In another session, Dr. Frank Fremont-Smith, medi cal director of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, said specialists attacking the same problem from different back grounds benefit from free wheeling bull sessions. He said a chemist and a physicist working separately on the same general problem are often antagonistic. One listens with a chip on his shoulder when the other makes a formal presentation at a scientific convention. The productive exchange of ideas often comes at these conventions only after the formal part is over and the scientists meet in give-and-take discussions.
