Museum Guns Cleaned, Classified for Display Jacksonville-Art Chipman, Medford, has been classifying and compiling histories of various guns in the Jackson ville museum, according to Miss Mary Hanley, curator. The display ranges from small pistols to muskets, shot guns and rifles. Many repre sent various stages of firearm development and some are in teresting because of their his torical associations. Many of the guns were made by John Miller, pioneer Jacksonville O gunsmith. Miss Hanley said. One of the most popular guns with visitors is the smooth-bore flintlock known as an "Jndian trade gun," since it was built specifically for trading with the Indians, Chipman said. The gun could be operated as long as the owner had powder. Small pebbles could be used when the lead balls were gone, Chipman said. Members of the Jefferson State Arms Collectors and Chipman, who is president, have been cleaning the guns. Attendance at the museum from July 10, 1950, to Feb. 1, 1960, totaled 364,207. A total of 1,151 persons visited the museum in January. During January visitors came from 27 states, - Canada and Peru. Cub Scout Troop, Den 1, Pack 100, Medford, and Girl Scout Troop 23, Jacksonville, also visited the museum. Gifts and loans for the month included books from Mrs. Olive Floyd, Medford; John Tyrrell, Lake Creek; Hal Ogle, Klamath Falls; a book and a map from Dr. Ar thur S. Taylor, Ashland; a campaign handkerchief from R. L. Burdic, Ashland; framed arrow points representing 12 Indian tribes from Warren T. Lee; an account book from Charles E. Ogle, both of Sa lem; letters and documents from Mrs. Marguerita Burch, Jacksonville, a cushion from C. C. Hoover, and a bank note from John Fichtner, both of Medford. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or.
