During November and December, 1959, repre sentatives from the Institute questioned 10,763 secondary school students. The poll cov ered grades seven through 12 in 200 schools in every area of the country, including Alaska and Hawaii. More Boys Smoke Of the 21 per cent polled that smoke, twice as many boys smoke as girls. In addi tion, boys tend to smoke more often, on the average, and start to smoke much younger. The poll revealed that 13.2 per cent of the boys who smoke consume one or more packs daily, while this amount is smoked by qnly six per cent of the girl smokers. In the next category, it was found that 26.9 per cent of boy smokers smoke a pack every other day, while 17 per cent of the girls smoke at this rate also. More than 18.6 per cent of the boys who smoke started to smoke on a regular basis at the age of 12 or younger. More than half of the smok ers started at age 14 or young er and more than 90 per cent started at 16 or younger. Started Early The girls polled revealed that nine per cent of them started the habit at the age of 12 or younger. More than 40 per cent were regular smokers at 14 or younger, while close to 90 per cent of them smoked regularly by their 16th birthday. On the basis of these fig ures, the Institute estimates that of the entire secondary school population, five per cent of all teen-age boys are ! smoking at the age of 12 and I better than 25 per cent are smoking at 16. Nearly three per cent of girls are smok ing by age 13 and more than 13 per cent at 17.
