Hence, there's no say ing that because the market Feb. 12 -Friday- since Lin did this or that this year, it coin's Birthday has been dis- will repeat itself next year. Gains in January Take January, for example. That's a month where there are more often gains than losses - 41 against 23 in the past 64 years have been gain ers in the industrial section. This year the market for this group in January broke by 56.74 points, the second wid est monthly point decline in history. The widest was in October, 1929, when industri als fell 69.94. This year's decline in Janu ary amounted to only a little more than 8 per cent. The one in Oct. 1929 showed a drop of 20 per cent. Industrial shares in Febru ary in the past have fallen 35 times and risen 28 iv the month, while the railroad rec ord has been 27 gains and 36 losses. Upi and Downs Last year the February mar ket gained 9.54 points in the industrial average. In 1958, it fell 10.10 points; in 1957 14.54 points, and in 1956 it gained 12.91 points. There were only three other times when the February average moved be yond a 10-point change. These were in 1931 when the aver age gained 22.11 points; in 1946 when it lost 14.56 points and in 1952 when it lost 10.61 points. There was a 9V4 point drop in February 1933 but aside from that and the others men tioned above, the February changes held to relatively nar row limits. . It is an interesting fact that the industrial average has had a net change of 30 points or more in the past in only 15 of the 372 months back to 1929. Of these changes, four were higher and 11 lower. There were five of these wide changes in 1929 - June when the average rose 36.38 points; August when it rose 32.63 points; September when it fell 36.88 points; October, down 69.94; and Nov. off 34.56. There were two wide monthly declines in 1930 -June when industrials fell 48.73 points or 18 per cent and September when they de clined 35.52 points. September Low The biggest percentage de cline of all came in Septem ber 1931 when the industrial average fell 42.80 points. That was a drop of 31 per cent since it came from a low fig ure - 139.41 down to 96.61. The other big January de clines - 30 points or more -came in March 1938; May 1940; November 1954; May 1956; July 1959; September 1959; and January 1960. February this year will have exactly the same num ber of trading days as Janu ary - 20. The equality is brought about through the fact that the month has 29 days for Leap Year. SERMON SUBJECT "Spirit" will be the sermon subject Sunday at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 100 Windsor ave. The service is held at 11 a.m. and all are welcome to attend. Young peo ple up to the age of 20 are in vited to attend Sunday school. Coming... this weekend Family Weekly presents February 7th With Your MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE MAIL TRIBUNE, Matffort, Or. - 1 There will be no holiday on continued as a stock exchange holiday. The Washington Birthday holiday falls on a Monday which makes that week have a three-day week end. Measured by dollars the market fell $24.8 billion in January. In the first two days of February it regained $7 billion of the loss. Fails To Follow Last year while the Indus trial average rose 19.85 points in January and February, the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose only 0.20 . point. That meant the other parts of the market failed to follow the industrial rise. The 1959 market early in the year saw a rise in the blue chips. During January of this year, that group was the hard est hit. 4-H NEWS Ruch Club A 4-H sewing club has start ed ia Ruch, with Carol Ste phens as president; Edith Reinking, vice president; Cla rine Hackett, secretary; and Darlene Christean, reporter.
