People want to know what is a hypo chondriac, and probably the best definition is, a man or woman who for years re mains con vinced he or she has some disease, such as cancer or heart trouble - and cannot be reassured. DR. ALVAREZ 1 was j u b v reading of a man in a hospital who got the idea that a slight protuberance of his skull on one side was a cancer. Every chance he got he would waylay a doctor and ask him anxiously about his "lump." Every doctor, day af ter day, told him it was no thing, but all this reassurance failed to cheer him in the slightest. One day a wealthy man of 60 came a long distance to see me about a cancer he was sure he had in his stomach. He traveled with a trained nurse to take care of his health. He admitted he had seen a large number of con sultants, all of whom had as sured him he had no cancer. But he still was sure he had it. Wouldn't Convince Him As, just then, I- was very busy, and did not want to waste any time I asked him if he would be satisfied enough to go home well if I were to get a surgeon to open his abdomen, under local an esthesia, and to lift out his stomach and show him that it was normal. Very honestly, he said "No," that that would not convince him. So we part ed good friends, and he left to go and see a prominent stomach specialist he had just heard of. In 1905. when I was an intern in a big City Hospital, I had a patient come in who taught me not to waste time with hypochondriacs. This one was convinced that a frog was hopping about in his stomach. I got one of my fellow-interns who was an ama teur magician to help me. We gave the man an emetic and while he was "heaving Salem Chess Club To Hold Tourney Salem - The Salem Chess club has issued invitations to chessmen throughout the state to attend the first Willamette Open Chess tournament Satur day and Sunday, Feb. 13 and 14, at the Salem YMCA, 685 Court st., NE. THERE'S A REASON There's a good reason why More People Listen to... K-DOV Than 'Any Other Station! WHY DON'T YOU Tune 1300 KC tomorrow morning and HEAR WHAT YOU'VE BEEN MISSING Presented by SILVER DOLLAR STAMP Roundup Emeritus Cansnlunt In I Emerltai Consultant In Medfrtne. Mr.jo Cubic Emeritus Professur ot Medicine Mayo C lints Jonah," my chum dropped a "palmed" frog into the basin. Naturally, the patient was thrilled and very happy. As he said, "You see; I was right, but no one but you two would believe me." My old professor, when I told him how I had "cured" the man, shook his head, and said, "You'll learn soon not to waste your time." Next day my patient came to say that I had been just too late; a dozen little frogs had spawned and were hopping about in his stomach! In my youth I used to think that an operation should cure a hypo chondriac who thought he had a severe appendicitis or stom ach ulcer or cancer, but I soon saw scores of hypochon driacs who, after a supposed ly very successful abdominal operation, had soon gotten back their old pain.
