Central Point Trapper Snares Large Beaver Portland It may have been old age, a moment of careless ness, or, a craftier adversary that finally caught up with a big 50-pound male beaver on the Chetco river in south western Oregon. This massive furbearer met his destiny in the trap of Frank Worrell of Central Point early this win ter after outwitting trappers in the Chetco drainage since the first trapping season was allowed in 1951 following a 20-year closure. Big Benny the dam builder had been in a trap once before during his younger dayo which may have accounted for his unerring craftiness in avoiding the trapper's sets throughout his later life. All through his years on the Chetco, Benny the Beaver carried an ear tag, put there by the game commission dur ing an extensive beaver live trapping and transplanting program. Records disclose the big, male beaver had been live-trapped on the Pistol riv er, ear-tagged and transplant ed to the Chetco in 1948.
