Keloids
Quite a few people want to
know what keloids are. They
are over-growths of the skin
along lines where it has been
cut or burned.
Some people
practically al
ways react to
a cut with a
formation of a
keloid. These
look like rais
ed welts. Skin
specialists tell
us that kel
oids are hard
Sometimes ex
posure to x-rays wili tend to
shrink them. Sometimes, after
a year or two, the keloid will
flatten down a pood deal, and
as it loses its red color, it will
not look so bad. I just saw a
woman who went to a physi
cian because of a bad keloid.
He must have been a rare op
tomist because he cut it out.
Now she has a bigger one in
its place!
Anti-Malaria Drugs
As many physicians know,
some of the synthetic quinine
like drugs, which were made
during World War II to pro
tect our soldiers from malaria
while they were fighting in
the South Seas, have been
found effective in helping
some people with arthritis,
especially of the rheumatoid
type. They can help, also, the
type that is due to the skin
disease psoriasis. Sometimes
the drug helps, also, in cases
of spondylitis-the type of
arthritis which causes the
spinal column of a young man
to become one single solid
bone; and it works miracu
lously in some cases of lupus
erythrematosis.
A Pseudo-Hermaphrodite
Produced
As I keep saying in this col
umn, it distresses me wnen 1
see police treating as crimin-
jals persons who have a mix-
up in their sexual feelings. I
keep reading now reports of
boy babies born with a fe
male type of genitalia. The
mixup was produced by a doc
tor's having given the mother
large doses of a female hor
mone all through her preg
nancy, almost from the be
ginning. This was done prob
ably with the idea of prevent
ing a miscarriage..
The fact that such treat
ment can change a boy baby
into something that looks
much like a girl baby shows
very clearly that later on no
one must treat the chijd as a
criminal because "it" keeps
maintaining that "it" is a boy,
and not a girl, as the obstetri
cian thought. Such people
should not be denied (as oft
en they are today) the right
to have the mistake corrected.
Dr. Alvarez' booklet on ner
vousness may be obtainel by
sending 25 cents and a large,
stamped, self-addressed envel
ope with your request to Dr.

une Syndicte, Box 857, Des
