MAIL TRIBUNE, Mcdferd, Or. Thursday, Jan. 28, 1960 5 In Ihe Day's News By FRANK JENKINS This modern world: Bomb hoaxes held up more than 350 airline passengers Monday and forced a luxury cruise liner sailing with 350 passengers to drop anchor be fore she could even leave port. One of them was aimed at a TWA jet liner about to take off for Paris, another at a National Airlines flight to Miami and the third at an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles. The cruise ship was headed for the Carib bean. All the hoaxes were per petrated in New York. All of them, of course, scared the passengers out of their boots And . . naturally enough . , spoiled their trips. "TJUMANITY" 11 is a broad term. It includes a lot of strange characters. M ORE modern world stuff: In Los Angeles, the click ing of teletypes inform us this morning, seats at the Finch murder trial are sell ing for as high as $10. It goes like this: Early risers line up daily before dawn, filling the corridors that lead to the courtroom. Later ar rivals bid for places held by the early birds. Prices start at four bits and go up as the time nears for the doors to open. When the doors swung back this morning and the stampede started, a big man sneaked into the line without buying his place. An elderly woman snapped angrily: "Some peo ple get away with murder!" I reckon it takes all kinds of people to make a world. QUESTION: Are carryings-on like this calculated to keep us ahead of Russia in the race for sci entific achievement that will dominate the remaining dec ades of the 20th century? Of course not. But let's not get too pessi mistic. People who indulge in shennanigans such as these are not the kind of people who make nations great. They're just the rag-tag and the bob-tail. Study Shows Work Of Those of 45 Washington - (LTD - A Labor Department study indicates that the average worker over 45 years old is just as effic ient as younger white-collar workers. Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell said Wednesday that experts compared the work produced by office employees in 21 private companies and five government agencies. The results showed that average productivity of work ers past 45 equals that of em ployees from 25 to 45 years old and is greater than that of workers under 25. "Our studies prove that old er workers have lower rates of absenteeism and turnover, are more consistent in their performance and frequently produce at a faster rate than younger workers," Mitchell said. "This indicates . . . that em ployers are passing up some excellent workers with valu able experience if they place an arbitrary age limit on hiring." 127 Die from Flu In Los Angeles Area Los Angeles -0IPD- One hun dred and 27 persons have died of influenza and pneumonia in Asian flu-plagued Los An geles during January more than double the number for the same time last year.
