A Thursday, Jan. 28, 1960 Asian Flu Said Breaking Out Throughout U.S. Washington, (Science Serv ice) Reports of more cases of Asian flu are pouring into the offices of the Public Health service here. Asian flu is breaking out simultaneously through out the country, a U.S. PHS ad visor told Science Service. The outbreak does not appear to be sweeping from east to west or north to south in any particular pattern, Dr. C. C. Dauer of the National Office of Vital Statistics said. The so-called O-flu reDort- edly affecting Los Angeles county will probably reveal itself to be none other than the Asian culprit, Dr. Dauer said. Earlv reDorts from the Pacific Coast stated that health officials there had termed the virus Q-flu be cause it had not been identi fied. The Q stands for ques tion mark. The California Health department is now conducting tests to determine the identity of the virus, Dr. Dauer said. Nona in Europe Since there have been no reports of confirmed cases of influenza from Europe, PHS officials assume the virus now attacking Americans is "home-grown." To date, the health departments of Michi gan. Texas and Hawaii have isolated the influenza virus from specific cases. Califor nia Kentucky. Ohio. Wiscon sin and Utah state health de partments reported influenza like illness among large emuDs of nersons. Persons who develop the symptoms suffer from sore throat, fever and aching. , This outbreak comes as no surprise to PHS officials who last fall warned that Asian flu and other types of influ enza could be expected tnis winter. "The role of the mathema tician is to create new mathe matics," said Dr. Stephen A .Ta nnines, mathematics pro- fessor at the University of British Columbia, "and there is a tremendo'us amount of new mathematics being cre ated all the time. Dr. Jennings today gave the first of five lectures sched uled at SOC this week. The public is invited to the re maining lectures, according to Dr. Floyd L. Study Reveals Little Wheat Storage loss Manhattan, Kans., (Science Service) - Wheat may be stored for a considerable per iod of time with little loss from shrinkage and grade changes, a study of losses for more than 2.5 million bushels of wheat stored in 53 govern- meni DU1 9Un m iauaaa shown.
