The sixth-ranked Engineers, perennial also - rans in the Southeastern Conference, fol lowed up an early season up set over once-mighty Ken tucky by whipping the Wild cats again Monday night, 65 44, at Atlanta. It was only the second time in the history of the SEC that a team downed Kentucky twice in one basketball cam paign. Tech also turned-the trick in 1955 but wound up that season with a losing 12-13 record. Minnesota set a Big Ten Conference record in turning B League Schools Open Week's Prep Jackson County B league schools open this week's prep basketball slate and have games on two nights. They lead off tonight with St.' Mary's at Prospect and Talent at Butte Falls. On Fri day St. Mary's goes to Butte Falls and Prospect to Talent. In the Southern Oregon conference Medford and Cra ter each have just one game. Medford journeys to Grants Pass on Friday and Crater is host to Ashland on Friday and will entertain Grants Pass on Saturday. In Saturday non-looD en gagements St. Mary's and II- Stanford Trips WSU Unted Press International It was just supposed to be a building year for , coach Howie Dallmar's Stanford cagers, but today the Indians could boast of a better than .500 season mark, a high-scoring individual ace, and a four game win streak. The Indians, now 8-7 on the season, played their third overtime struggle of the cam paign Monday night and dumped Washington state, 67 58, in the Cougar's lair. It was 52-52 when the final whistle tooted, but then the Indians went on the warpath and outscored WSC, 15-6, in the overtime period. Key to Stanford's resurg ence is John Arrillaga, a hot-and-cold performer in past campaigns, but one who ap pears to have come in to his own in recent action. He moved his season's av erage up to about 16 points per contest by tallying 26 Monday night for a new per sonal and. Stanford high for the year. There was no other major coast cage action. He then slipped away be fore newsmen could inter view him. In past years the Red Sox had set up a mob scene news conference when Williams signed. It was felt clearly this time that Wil liams, an ardent foe of sports writers, wanted to avoid questions on the possibility of his improving on his 1959 substandard performance. (-UPI Telephoto) J. Jensen Quits Game Boston -0IPD- The Boston Red Sox announced today that star outfielder Jackie Jensen had quit baseball. The Red Sox said Jensen quit because of the family reasons he had mentioned several times during last season and during the off season. Red Sox publicist Jack Malaney told United Press International that the club has offered Jensen a "nice" contract, believed to have called for more than $40, 000, but "it made no differ ence." "He called Monday from his Nevada home and told us he was through," Mala ney said. "We withheld the information at his request but apparently he said something on the West Coast." SOC Meets OTI Tonight . Southern Oregon college ventures over the hill to Klamath Falls for a single cage game with Oregon ..Tech tonight at 8 o'clock. The Raiders must win this game io keep alive hopes for the top spot in the Ore gon collegiate -conference and to maintain their hold on second place. Doubtful starter this ev ening is Gordon Carrigan, who is still on the sick list and did not dress down for practice last night. For the fourth week in a row the Pirates nabbed all eight first place votes for a perfect 80 points. But the Pi rates will have to keep a close lookout for the number two team, Medford. The Black Tornado, winner of two games over the week end, grabbed off all eight sec ond place votes and polled 72 votes. That's only eight be hind Marshfield and the clos est Medford has been this season. There was some shuffling around of teams in the re maining spots. Cleveland of Portland took over the number three spot ousting North Bend which suffered its second defeat of the season over the week end Cleveland barely edged out the Bulldogs with 56 points while North Bend polled 55 for fourth spot. Klamath Falls rounds out the top five with 44 points after being fourth last week. The remaining teams in order shaped . up this way: Jefferson of Portland, Her miston, La Grande, Spring field and South Salem. Springfield is the new comer to the top 10 this week. The Millers polled 10 votes for ninth spot and sport an 8-4 win-loss mark. Hermiston, leader in the Inter-Mountain league, has the most wins of any team in the top 10 with 12. Bird Dog Club Sets First Trial Rogue Valley Retriever club will hold a picnic field trial, it's first event of the year at 8 a.m., Sunday Jan. 31 near the Modoc orchards, Jack Boettcher, M e d f o r d, club member, announced. Actual site of the picnic field trial will be on the north side of the military bridge in the county gravel pit area. This will prepare club mem bers for the American Kennel club field trial to be held in March. The public is invited. About 80 participants are ex pected, Boettcher said. One of the purposes of the field trials is conservation through re trieving all wounded or dead birds. Officials for the event are Eugene Hunt and Jack Boet tcher, both of Medford and open stake judges; student open stake judge, Bob Morris Jr., Medford; qualifying stake judges, Dr. Eugene Meyer- ding, Medford, and Dr. Char les Verstag, Cave Junction; student qualifying stake judge, Jack Wheeler; derby stake judges Ken Denman, Medford, and Hillman Miller, Central Point; qualifying stake student judge, Mrs. Vera Lilya, Prospect; puppy stake judges, Everett Mc Graw, Medford, and Frank Kuoni, Central Point; and student puppy judge, Art Day, Phoenix. Ducks and pigeons are to be used in all stakes except for the puppy stakes when dummy birds will be used, Boettcher said. Zion Church Nips Baptists Zion Lutheran added anoth ed victory last night in Church Basketball league play for an overall record of 2 wins and no losses as it defeated First Baptist 62 to 24 on the YMCA floor. High point man for the game and Zion Lutheran was Bud Quinney with 19 points. John Shaw was close second to Quinney for Zion Luther an with 18 points. Dean God dard was high pointer for the First Baptists with 10 points. Half-time score was 30 to 9 for the Zion Lutherans. During other play the Med ford YMCA team topped Sac red Heart last night 25 to 21. This gave both teams a 1 win and 1 loss record. Bob Ackley was high point man for the YMCA with 9 and Don MacPherson for Sacred Heart with 8. Half time score was 14 to 13 for the YMCA. The First Methodists edged the First Christians last night 49 to 42 for a record of 2 wins and 1 loss. This left First Christian with 1 win and 2 losses. Wayne Thompson was high pointer for the First Meth odists with 15 points and George Lindermann for the MEDFORD MOTORS, INC. 225 South Riverside National League Sets Schedule Cincinnati flIPB The Na tional league announced its 1960 schedule today with a record number of 312 night games, which can be largely' credited or blamed-depend-ing on how you look at it-on the world champion Los An geles Dodgers. Every year at this time, the National league sets a record for the most night games ever scheduled. Last year the rec ord was 296. The Dodgers are chiefly responsible for this year's new mark with an individual club record of 64 night games at home, including two twi night doubleheaders. The National league season officially will open on April 12, a week earlier than the American league, but both leagues will close on Oct. 2. Philadelphia opens at Cin cinnati, Pittsburgh at Mil waukee, St. Louis at San Francisco and Chicago at Los Angeles at night. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh's home open ers are slated for April 14, St. Louis' for April 19, and Chi cago makes its first appear ance at home on April 22. Dodgers Set Games Next to the Dodgers, who have only 13 day games scheduled at home, the Phil lies will play the most night games at home, 52. The Card inals are down for 48, the Reds 45, the Pirates 42, the Braves 38, the Giants 23, and the Cubs will play all 77 of their home games during the day-time as usual.
