MAIL TRIBUNE. Medford, Or. C Thursday, Jan. 21, I960 " In the Day's Hews ' By FRANK JENKINS y J;'rom Washington: Nearly one - eighth of the federal budget for the next .fiscal year (a fiscal year is a financial year) will go to pay lntest on toe Public debt. . Treasury estimates that interest charges in the 1961 ;fiscf'. year will come to nine billion, 585 million dollars. .That is more than it cost to run the entire federal govern ment before World War II. QUESTION: How much is a billion dol SOMEBODY figured it out this nn j " "Jf W1C UkLLCl May If a man stood over a big hole in the ground and drop- ped in a $20 bill once every minute, day and night, it would take him 95 YEARS to throw a billion dollars into the hole. - " pUT it like this: - ; The annual interest charge on the federal debt of the U.S. A. is approximately nine and a half billion dollars. Stand ing at the edge of a big hole and dropping into it a $20 bill once every minute, day and night, it would take a citizen of average ability 95 years to drop in ONE billion dollars. So You see - It would take him a little better than 900 YEARS to throw in enough to pay our interest bill for JUST ONE YEAR. The poor devil would probably die of boredom be fore he got his job done. PRETTY rough? You ain't heard nothin' . yet. Listen: If the annual interest bill on our national debt remains . approximately stable at nine and a half billion dollars a ' year, the poor guy would fall behind at the rate of about 900 YEARS EVERY YEAR. You could hardly blame him if he got discouraged and quit his job. IN CONCLUSION: -At the rate of one $20 bill every minute, day and night, it would take an average citi zen 95 years to throw a bil lion dollars down the hole. Our SPENDER congress can throw a billion dollars down the hole in just about no timer flat. .. , ; - So I reckon we'll have to ad mit that our congress is pretty efficient, after all.
