T3AVY CROCKETT WEDS Santa Barbara, Calif.-flJPD-Actor Fess Parker, 35, "Davey Crockett" of television fame, married Margy Rinehart, 31, Tuesday. Freda S. All I want is a little fun. Mr. G.S. Why can't she relax with a good book? Freda S. I am 14 and I'm having an awful hassle with my father about staying out at night no later than 10 with some of my friends. My mother is understanding, but Dad is awful. I'm certainly no juvenile delinquent. I have a good av erage at school and take piano lessons so I have to do home work and practice every night. After that I'm exhaust ed and I just want to relax. We hang around a playground or go for sodas at the drug store. On Saturday night I us ually babysit, so I certainly don't have much social life. All I want is a little fun. My father says we act like idiots, but it happens to be fun to me. Mr. G.S. I have seen those girl friends of Freda's "hang ing around" outside the play ground and I think it's awful. They giggle, shriek, some times pass around cigarettes and try to attract the atten tion of the boys. It's disgust ing and I don't see why Freda has to be part of all that. Why can't she relax with a good book? My wife says Freda is "only a baby" and we expect too much of her, but I say this "baby" will be wanting to get married in three or four years and it's time for her to start acting like a young lady. I suspect that Freda is just afraid of being different from the other girls. I can't make her understand that she should aim higher. The Council: Freda should realize that she is extremely lucky to have a father who takes so deep an interest in her development. It is some thing to be proud of and bodes well for her future. On the other hand, Mr. G.S. should recognize that most adolescents have a powerful drive to fit in with the crowd and this impluse cannot be dismissed as wrong. It is an important part of their de velopment. Teenagers need to relate in some way to their own generation. The fact that Freda's mother is on her side indicates that she recognizes Freda lacks something import ant in her life. However, we don't care much for the picture present ed of Freda's opportunity for social life. We don't think "hanging around" a play ground at night is the best way for a young girl to en joy sociability. Freda should seek out some supervised ac tivities in the neighborhood a "Y" or church group. This is not purely a matter of safety, although that ele ment is important. She would be using the time better and learning to socialize on a' STORM STATUS Washington - A hurricane does not become a hurricane until the U.S. weather bureau determines it has a wind ve locity of 75 or more miles per hour. more adult level. The "hang ing around" kind of social izing is all too often an ac tivity indulged in out of a feeling of inadequacy. Mem bers of the gang bolster one another's ego in a rather un productive way. That's why they look and sound foolish to outsiders. Mr. G.S. should try to un derstand his daughter's needs and help her find a good way of satisfying them. If he mere ly overrides her, the needs remain unanswered and she may find other equally un satisfactory ways of dealing with them. She can't settle down with a good book when she urgently wants friends and gaiety. (Copyright 1960, General Features Corp.) ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Washington Correspondent Washington - An officer of the Social Security . Clubs of Oregon, Inc., has charged a rival organ ization, United Social Securi ty Organiza t i o n s, Inc., with using the names of Ore gon's two U.S. senators and a con gressman to help solicit a Robt. smith m e mberships at S10 per person. Sens. Wayne Morse, Rich ard L. Neuberger and Rep. Charles O. Porter (D-Ore.) all say they have not endorsed the program of either group not given any authorization to use their names in member ship campaigns. Social Security Clubs has headquarters i n Portland, headed bV Floyd K. Dover. United Social Security is headquartered at Eugene, headed by Gordon S. Slayter. Both organizations claim their goal is to get S150 a month pensions for retired folks. The allegations was made by Laura Atterberry of . Ma pleton, state secretary for So cial Security Clubs. In letters to the three lawmakers, she claimed that United Social Security membership sales agents are "going over the state showing letters suppos edly written" by Morse, Neu berger and Porter "endorsing their program, to people who have a great deal of respect for your views." Agent in Florence Area Mrs. Atterbery contended that an agent was working the Florence area, selling memberships at S10 per per son, with the use of letters from the Oregon solons. She alleged that over 600 mem berships were sold in Novem ber. She said the sales agents receive 4 to $5 in commis sions for each $10 member ship they sell. "Our organization, the So cial Security Clubs of Ore gon, Inc., would like to know if they have such letters from our Oregon lawmakers or if they have the rights to use your good name among our voters to rob our old folks of $10 they cannot afford," Mrs. Atterberry wrote Con gressman' Porter. "Mr. Porter, please have this stopped if untrue, for your sake and that of our elderly people, we need a more adequate social security, but not at the expense of our people who need every dime they now receive," she wrote. Mrs. Atterberry said her Committees for Kapers Listed Jerry Lausmann, advertis ing chairman for the 1960 Medford Kiwanis Kapers, and Fred Morlan, assistant ad vertising chairman, have an nounced special committee ap pointments for advertising sales. They are Dr. Billy Black stone, dentists; John Dellen back, attorneys; Gordon Mc Kinzie, insurance; Robert Voegtly, wholesale lumber and mills; Richard Paine, fruit industry; Dr. Merle Fo land, doctors; Darrell Miller, automobile dealers; Bill Clark, retail gasoline distribu tors; Dwight Houghton, banks, savings and loans; Paul Mit chell, retail grocers; Jack Ed son, retail lumber; Jack More land, electrical dealers; Jim Ambler, concessions and spec ial activities and Vic Milnes, program printing and distri bution. Dates for the 1960 Kiwanis Kapers are Feb. 24, 25 and 26, according to Darl Gleed, general chairman. Title of the 1960 show will be "Around the Town." Kapers presenta tions will be at Medford High school, using the Medford Ki wanis club membership and other interested groups. Proceeds from the show will be used to continue sup port of the children's dental clinc, which operates at the county courthouse under Ki wanis and dental association sponsorship. SMALLEST CAPITAL Carson City - This city, founded in 1858, was made the capital of Nevada in 1861, and today is the nation's smallest capital in population figures. ACTRESS ILL Hollywood - (DPD Actress Kathy Nolan, costar of the "Real McCoys" television ser ies, was hospitlized Tuesday for treatment of Asian flu. group charges $2 a year to would be $42 billion a year, members "and we do not show letters from important people to receive the several hundred members we do have." She added: "United Social Security, Inc., is adver tised as a non-profit organ ization but the president gets a wage, and each agent re ceives his commission. Is that non-profit?" Tactics Deplored Porter said he deplored tactics of "people who go around and talk about pie-in-the-sky proposals like this to get $10 from people who can't afford it." He said he was glad to see elderly persons organized in behalf of im provements in social security programs, "but I don't ,want to see them misled or for my name to be used. I have never endorsed the program of any particular group." Porter pointed out that the cost to the- federal govern ment of paying all persons S150 per month at age 60 and if other benefits sought by these groups were grant ed the total cost would be $60 billion. Sen. Morse wrote to Mrs. Atterbery that he had not endorsed the United Social Security group or any other. When some persons asked his opinion of joining such an or ganization, he told them that is their right but added: "A 4-cent stamp invested in writing to your congressman and senator is much more ef fective, in my opinion, than the dues you might pay to someone else to represent you here." Morse added, however, he didn't want to "discount or belittle the work of this par ticular group which is solicit ing your membership because I know very little about it." Social Security Clubs claims 5000 members in '21 states, mostly on the West Coast. United Social Securi ty was formed by Slayter af ter he broke away from the other group. United is affil iated with National Pension Federation Inc., Washington, D.C., and claims chapters in 36 states. ' . Neither organization has any connection with the fed eral government or its Social Security Administration, as some members have been led to believe by agents solicit ing memberships. No Serious Consideration Dover's group is for S150 a month at age 60 for every one entitled to social security benefits. Slayter's group wants $150 a month for all men and women at age 62. Legislation introduced in Congress to implement these proposals has received no serious consideration be cause of its whopping cost. Sen. Neuberger wrote Mrs. Atterbury he had given no "blanket endorsement to the program of any particular or ganization in Oregon organ ized to promote social secur ity reform." "In view of the many crit ical demands on our federal budget, I do not see how Congress would be justified at this time in authorizing a pension program involving a minimum of $150 a month social . security," Neuberger said. He pointed out that he has favored individual employee MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1960 contributions to the social se curity fund for increased ben efits received by employees.
