YOU Two Sentenced in District Court Two Medford men were sentenced in district court Thursday to six months in the county jail for petty lar ceny. A 16-year-old boy who was involved in petty larceny charges was turned over to Jackson county juvenile au thorities. The trio admitted to authorities they took five gallons of gasoline from a vehicle at the 401 orchard. Four Rogue River youths were fined S25 each in dis trict court Friday after plead ing guilty to illegal possession of liquor. All are 18 years old. Fined were Neil Ray Wagner, Paul Harry Ross, Harry DeWitt McCabe, and Arthur Edgar Johanson. The youths were arrested in Gold Hill by sheriffs offi cers and lodged in the coun ty jail. Judge Clarifies Ashland Ordinance Ashland - An ordinance passed Dec. 1 by the Ashland city council actually prohibits persons under 18 years of age from smoking anywhere but in private homes, accord ing to Municipal Judge Rich ard Cottle. Cottle dismissed charges of smoking in public against two youths Friday, he said, be cause it seemed the law was not thoroughly understood by persons concerned or their parents. Copies of the ordinance will be posted at Ashland senior and junior high schools, he said, and school officials have agreed to broadcast an announcement to clarify the ordinance. Warn? rigr.u reen.W- Social Security Ends iiTiit. ai J 1 : . ton. 4-;-nJ nrn1mo With the delivery of 13 million benefit checks to homes all over the nation, the federal old-age and sur vivors insurance program last week completed its first 20 years of monthly benefit pay ments. Taking note of the event, Edward B. Jacobson, district manager of the Medford so cial security office, pointed out that this is the 25th anni versary . year of the social security law. Although monthly old-age payments had not been orig inally scheduled to start un til 1942, he said, Congress amended the law in turn to move up the starting date to January, 1940, and also to provide for the payment of dependents and survivors benefits as well as old-age insurance benefits. Receive $50 Billion Since January, 1940, when monthly benefits first became payable, 21 million benefi ciaries have received a total of S50.4 billion in ,monthly benefit payments, he said. This includes payments to disabled workers under the 1956 amendments to the law. Over the 20-year period, Jury Finds Man Guilty of Charge Ashland - An Ashland mu nicipal court jury last week found 36-year-old Lester W. Alwine guilty of driving while under the influence of intoxicating beverages. Alwine, 136 North Second st., was fined $200 . plus $5 court costs and drew a 30-day suspended jail sentence. . Alwine was arrested Sept. 20 by Ashland police after his auto struck a parked car, causing it to strike a second parked vehicle. HART TRADE! ONE OF THESE 5 IRE Herried Real Estate (HR) SP 2-2367 Medford Realty Co. (MR) SP 2-5750 INDEPENDENT REALTY EXCHANGE By Jimmy Hado Years of retired workers and their de pendents have received S38.1 billion; S11.6 billion in monthly , benefits have been paid to the survivors of work ers who have died (in addi tion to the . SI. 2 billion in lump sum death benefits); and since July, 1957, $750 million has been paid to dis abled workers aged 50 to 65, and their dependents. At the end of 1959, Jacob son said, S850 million a month was being paid out nationally in old-age,, survivors, and dis ability - insurance benefits. For the month' of February, 1959, the last count for Jack son county, $387, 153 a month was being paid to 6,476 people. "He added that the number of beneficiaries and the total monthly payments have increased somewhat since that time. Cites Growth Citing the "remarkable growth" . of social security over the last 20 years, Jacob son said that payments certi fied for January, 1940, amounted to only $76,000 for the country as " a whole, and went to only 4,000 benefi ciaries.' With 1334 million people ': now on the monthly benefit rolls, total payments for 1959 topped S10.3 billion, compared with $32.1 million for the entire year of 1940, a 320-fold increase. Old-age, survivors, and dis ability insurance benefits are paid as a matter of right, he pointed out, based upon a workers record of earnings in employment or self-employment covered by social security. -; When the program started, only about 26 million em ployees in commerce and in dustry were covered. Today, about 9 out of 10 gainfully em ployed people, both employ ed and self-employed, are covered. About 76 million Americans have worked long enough under social security to be fully insured for the payment of survivors bene fits. ,- - ' From Trust Funds Old-age, survivors, and dis ability insurance benefits are paid out of two separate trust funds maintained in the U.S. Treasury. These funds have been built up with the social security tax contributions of employees, their employers, and the self-employed. That money not needed for 'the current payment of bene- j fits and administrative costs is invested in interest-bearing i obligations of the U.S. Gov ernment. Interest earned on these investments is added to the funds. At the end of the last fis cal year, in June, 1959, the Old-Age and Survivors Trust Fund amounted to 521.5 bil lion. Twenty years ago, it was $1.7 billion. The Disabil ity Insurance Trust Fund, es tablished on Jan. 1, 1957, amounted to $1.7 billion at the end of the fiscal year. REALTORS Spencer Bagley Ae'ey .
