A Sunday, Jan. 1 7, 1960 3,258 Are X-Rayed At Clinic in 1959 iipiiiiiiiiiiii TAXI SERVICE - Taking off from the roof of a building in downtown Los Angeles with the city hall in the background, is one of 16 three-passenger helicopters which will go into service as taxi cabs on Feb. 1. The taxis will provide round trip service from downtown Los Angeles to International Airport. The flights will be daily, except Sunday, on a dawn-to-dusk basis. Medical Panel to Discuss Radiology The first medical panel dis cussion of the 1960 television series, sponsored by the Jack son County Tuberculosis and Health association, in cooper ation with the Jackson Coun ty Medical Society and sta tion' KBES-TV, will be pre sented at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18. Three physicians and sur geons whose practice is lim ited to radiology will discuss the values and dangers of x-rays and other types of rad iation on the half -hour pro-' gram. Early-day x-ray equipment, sent here from Portland . for the program, will be shown and compared to present-day equipment with the improved techniques and safeguards now .employed by radiolo gists. Many of the misconceptions and prejudices concerning x-ray since its discovery . in Bavaria nearly 65 years ago will be discussed, and the uses of x-ray, then and now, will be compared. Various types of radiation will be classified, and many of the most com mon questions asked by lay persons will be answered by the radiologists. The discus sio will conclude with an ac count of what science pre dicts for x-ray in the future. Appearing on the panel will be Dr. Earl L. Lawson and Dr. Alan S. Markee, Med- ford, and Dr. William S Judy, Grants Pass. A total of 516 more persons received chest x-rays at fhe Jackson County Tuberculosis and Health association spon sored clinic at Sacred Heart hospital last year than in 1958, according to association officials. Some 3,258 out-patients were x-rayed last year, com pared to 2,742 in 1958. Although there were fewer confirmed new cases of tu berculosis in the county last year, the association said the total pathology from the clin ic reached a higher percent age than in 1958. 11 New Cases Eleven new cases of TB in the county were recorded at the health department last year, while the number of confirmed new cases totaled 23 in 1958. The number of Area Drivers Get Licenses Suspended Salem The department of motor vehicles has re leased names of 461 drivers whose licenses were ordered suspended during the period beginning Jan. 4 and ending Jan. 8. Length of suspension varies depending on charges in volved, recommendation of court, discretionary action by the department or require ments of Oregon law. The department warned drivers that the penalty for driving while suspended is a jail sentence of no less than two days and up to six months, and there may be im posed a fine up to $500. Un der licensing procedures, this will also result in an addi tional year of suspension. Among those suspended in Jackson county were: cases now on the register at the healtlf department totals 120, the association said. In all cases, a constant check is maintained. Total pathology for 1959 was 409 out of the 3,258 pa tients x-rayed, or about 12.5 per cent. About 1.8 per cent of the total number showed conditions suggestive of tu berculosis. Although many of them were cases of old or healed disease, a number re quired further study to elimi nate active TB, the associa tion noted. A total of 106 patients were I referred to their doctors for various heart conditions fol lowing chest x-rays, and 158 were advised to consult their physicians about miscellane eous conditions. Another 84 persons required further study for conditions other than possible tuberculosis. Largest Clinics The association reported that the largest clinics were held in April, May, August and September, and the smallest in November and December. "When the Democrats were in they let the horse out of the barn, and the Republicans have done nothing to get him back," he said. OLCC To Study Food at Outlets ino t.hos months ripnaiice nf c - About 500 persons visited the clinic during September, the ' association noted. Since all teachers and school em ployees are required to have either a tuberculin skin test or a chest x-ray they make up the largest percentage of patients during August and September. The chest x-ray clinic has been active for five years, and is one of the few such clinics in the state, the associ ation said. It represents a permanent facility in the community and many phy sicians send their patients there for chest x-rays as a routine part of annual phys ical examinations. Members of the Sacred Heart hospital Providence Guild furnish clerical assist ance at the clinics, with three or four women helping each week. The chest x-ray com mittee of the association . is responsible for the s clinic's supervision, and reports to patients and physicians each week. Portland-HJPE-A proposal to spell out the minimum amount of food available in liquor-by-the-drink outlets has been taken under advise ment by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. The commission Thursday held a hearing on the matter attended by about 50 persons. The proposal would call for a regulation establishing a mini mum food volume and also require that kitchens be oper ative during the time the bar is in operation. Those speaking against it said it would not be economic ally sound to keep the kitchen open during all hours liquor is sold. At present the regulations specify that liquor licenses may be issued on premises where food is cooked and served.
