Maison, superintendent of state police, said today officers stopped 7,200 motorists in roadblocks set up for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Straub Announces Selection of Party Committee Portland -(UPD- Robert W. Straub,' state Democratic c h a ir m a n, has announced selection of a 27-m ember platform and resolutions com mittee to serve as the key platform-writing body at the Oregon Democratic conven tion in Salem Jan. 29-30. Chairman of the committee is Ken Johnson, Salem news man. Straub said the committee will receive resolutions from subcommittees, and shape and write the platform for sub mission to the general con vention. Parking Program OK'd in Portland Portland -(UPD Downtown Portland Inc., Thursday night approved a 821,512,000 off street parking program for the downtown area. The plan would be financed by revenue bonds, issued by the city and secured by a spe cial assessment district which takes in the entire downtown area. Edgar W. Smith, president of the group, said this was the first step in a plan to revital ize the area. The program calls for con struction of nine parking ga rages for short-time parkers. Practically all major office buildings, department stores and facilities would be within two blocks of one of the garages. Francis Files for Attorney General Salem - (LTD - State Sen. Carl H. Francis (R-Dayton) Thursday became the first person to file for Oregon at torney general. He seeks the Republican nomination. Present attorney general is Robert Y. Thornton, a Demo crat. Francis, an attorney, has served in the Legislature since 1943. His ballot state ment is "equal justice for all." Francis was an unsuccess ful candidate for attorney general four years ago agaiiist Thornton. David Gault Joins Arnold Air Society Eugene - David W. Gault, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gault, box 541, Medford, has been initiated into Arnold Air Society, honorary for advanc ed Air Force students at the University of Oregon. Eight other outstanding jun ior and senior Air Force ca dets have been taken into the organization. Gault is a senior majoring in acting. Panama Freighter Sinks in Pacific Otaru, Japan-(UPD-The 8,000 ton Panamanian freighter Gambler sank in the Pacific Thursday 690 miles southeast of Hokkaido but all 30 crew men and officers were picked up safely by an ocean-going rescue tug, the Japan coast guard reported today. Lloyd's Registry does not list any vessel named Gambler. According to the coast guard, the freighter was tak ing a cargo of 8,500 tons of scrap from San Pedro, Calif., to Kobe, Japan, when it ran low on fuel Jan. 7. Drifting helplessly in heavy seas, it began taking on water arid flashed a distress signal. The 1,200-ton tug Cambrian Salvor sped from Yokosuka and reached the Gambler on Jan. 10. RESEARCHER DIES Eastchester, N.Y.-OIPD-Fred P. Diener, 61, director of re search of the Universal Atlas Cement Division, U.S.- Steel Corp., died Tuesday. SWARTSFAGER Funeral services for John William Swartsfager, 79, of 629 Franquette st., who died in a local hospital Thursday, will be held at Perl Funeral home Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Dr. George Roseberry of the First Methodist church will officiate. Interment will be in the Jacksonville cemetery. Mr. Swartsfager was born on July 4, 1880, in Minnesota. He moved to Jacksonville when he was a child, and moved to Klamath Falls in 1912. In October, 1958, he moved to Medford. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ida Swartsfager, Klam ath Falls; three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Babcock. Med ford: Nellie and Ada Mae Swartsfager, both of Klamath Falls; one son, Ernest Arnold Swartsfager, Klamath Falls; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Brown, Port Angeles, Wash.; one niece, Marie Wimer, Med ford; 10 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.
