V MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. A Thursday, Jan. 14, 1960 1 A 1 11 w Air Force Devises New Fitting System Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio -(Science Service)- The Air Force has taken a sharp look at 4,000 men and devised a sizing system for flight clothing that does away with atrocious misfits-such as jackets having sleeves six inches too long. Based only on the relation ship between a man's height and weight, the new sizing system has already proved it self workable in experiment al tests. Using partial-pressure suits, "get-me-down" protec tive suits and anti-gravity suits, Air Force researchers properly fitted 96 per cent of 226 men by knowing only their heights and weights. Fitting Critical Proper fitting of these skin tight suits is critical. A poor fit could spell disaster for the wearer under today's high speed, high-altitude flight conditions. The sizing system was worked out by Irvin Emanuel and Milton Alexander of the Aero Medical laboratory here, and Edmund Churchill and Bruce Truett of Antioch col lege. The experimenters said the height-weight system gives a better fit for the crewman from both protective and comfort standpoint-for two reasons. First, the fit no longer ."depends on the fitter's questionable skill as an an thropometrist." Second, the sizing information compiled in the study will enable clothes designers to have a more accurate knowledge of body proportions and their variability. Advantages Cited Other advantages cited: simpler garments, better fits while in the field, minimum alterations with a saving in money, fewer sizes needed for some garments, and easier to keep the right stocks on hand. Test results on the MC-4A, a partial pressure suit, showed that 43 of 48 men were prop erly fitted to receive protec tion by the suits at altitudes of 65,000 feet or above. The men ranged in age from 19 to 44 years old, in height from 5 feet 4 inches to 6 feet 4 inches and in weight from 123 to 225 pounds. Three of the remaining five "unfitted" men were fitted with suits one size larger, and the remaining two men were judged to be improperly fitted. Alterations were required to fit one of these two men, and the other was fitted with an extra-long large suit that he said was uncomfortable. Here Inspector Ray La Belle, who heads the mounted division of the Detroit police force, leads a contingent of mounted police during a parade. " - (UPI Telephoto) Mounted Police, Near Oblivion, Declared Effective in Detroit Detroit - (UPD - The Motor City, which pusned old dob bin down the road toward ob livion, now is one of the last bastions of the horse in police work. The . International Associa tion of Chiefs of Police lists only five other metropolitan cities - Philadelphia, New York, Miami, Washington and Cleveland - which still have mounted policemen. The association says the number of cities using horses in police work is decreasing rapidly because of the high cost of maintaining such a force and because of the in creasing mobility of motor cycle policemen. Effective Controlling Crowds "The biggest feature of the mounted division is mob con trol," La Belle said, "we have found nothing quite as effec tive in controlling a crowd as a mounted policeman. "Most people have a slight natural fear of horses. They back away from a horse quick er than they do a motorcycle because they know' a police man has full control over the motorcycle but they aren't quite sure what the horse might do, even though the po licemen has full control of the highly-trained animal." La. Belle said the advantage of height was not limited to appearances, however. Used During Strike ' "A man on horseback, sit ting high above the . crowd can't be jostled as easily, he doesn't lose dignity and he can get a better overall pic ture of a crowd. He can see where trouble spots are form ing within the crowd. me mounted police are most often used to control crowds during parades, when they actually add to the pagentry, but their value in Detroit was most dramatical ly demonstrated during riotous strike at the Square D Co. in 1954, La Belle said. There were frequent clashes between massed pickets and management personnel of the company entering the plant gates. La Belle's men were ordered out to maintain order and played a major role In calming antagonists on both sides of the picket line. La Belle says Detroit police also find mounted police es pecially effective in patrol ling parks and' alleys. Foreign Trade i Effects Outlined Denver - (UPD - Even the residents of a state as far in land as Colorado depend a great deal on foreign trade, they were told recently by George Killion, president of the American President Lines and chairman of the Commit tee of American Steamship Lines. Killion said during a visit to his native state that Colo rado's share of U.S. foreign trade in 1958 was $85 mil lion. He explained: - . "You sent to foreign mar kets an estimated $46 mil lion worth of processed foods, aircraft, machinery, primary metals, chemicals and fabri cated metals. . Your farmers exported some $29 million worth of wheat, barley and corn. ' Your miners exported approximately $10 million worth of molybdenum ore. '."The paychecks of some 138,000 Colorado workers are directly affected by foreign trade where the livelihood of many additional thousands in the state depends upon sup porting industries and trades." .....
