6 MAIL TRIBUNE, MadforJ, Or. B Thursday, Jan. 14, 1960 Biggest Call for Teacher Grads Received at OSC Corvallis - Biggest call for ter.cher graduates in history was received last year by the Oregon State college school of education with the demand exceeding the supply in al most all fields. A report prepared by Mrs, Kathryn Smith, director of the teacher placement office, shows 283 June graduates were placed in their first teaching positions and 230 graduates of past years were placed in new and better teaching jobs, some in admin istrative posts. Beginning salaries averaged between $4,100 and $4,600, with $5,772 as the top start ing figure. Nearly 200 school adminis trators from Oregon, Califor nia, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii came to the campus for interviews with teacher candidates, Mrs. Smith report ed. More than 7,000 teacher vacancies were listed during the year with the teacher placement office. The major ity were for elementary teach ing positions. The number of requests for college teachers was up over previous years. Demand for Teachers Most calls at OSC from high schools were for teachers of home economics, girls physical education, mathema tics, science, industrial arts and business subjects. A great many calls were received al so, Mrs. Smith noted, for graduates prepared to do special-type teaching, such as speech correction work, reme dial reading, or working with retarded children. Foreign language teachers also are in short supply. Elementary schools are seeking more young men teachers. About three-fourths of the OSC graduates are staying in Oregon to teach but opportu nities in other states attracted a big group of teachers again this year. The OSC place ment office also helped grad uates get teaching jobs in Alaska. France, Guam, Ha waii, Canada and England. Some of these were wives of servicemen stationed oversea'. It is the low night tempera ture associated with higher elevations that seems to en able this "foreign," temperate zone plant to grow and flour ish, according to E. J. Britten of the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station. A set of experiments, re ported in the journal Science, showed white clover (Trifoli um repens) that flowered un der natural conditions failed to flower if subjected to cool days and warm nights. Fur thermore, plants that did not flower in Hawaiian areas from which they originated did flower under warm day cool night conditions. There is some diversity in the clover's adaptation to life in the tropics, the researcher said. Some groups or clones flowered freely without ex - posure to cold nights. This seems to indicate that flow ering is an apparent or pheno- typic response of the geno type to its environment.
