Dial SP 2-6141 The Mullein Plant is A Weed of Many Virtues The hummingbirds were probably the first to find a use for the rather beautiful weed we call the "mullein." The birds used the felt-like "wool," with which the plant clothes its leaves, for a soft lining for their tiny nests. The ancient Greeks had a name to, as well as a practi cal use for the plant. They dried the leaves and used them for lamp-wicks. About the same time or perhaps a little earlier the ancient Ro mans dipped the sturdy flow er stalks of the mullein in melted suet, lighted them and carried them as torches in fu neral parades. Early Americans found the soft material on the leaves of the mullein was excellent for candlewicks. Country maid ens, just before an important date, rubbed the velvety leaves on their cheeks, giv ing them a rosy complexion. Medicinal Value For many centuries, long before the New Land was set tled, the leaves of the mullein became the primary ingredi ent in various medicines. At one time it even was believed to be an effective cure in the treatment of leprosy. The sup posed medicinal benefits of this plant gained favor m ear ly America. "Mullein tea, a steaming beverage made from steeping the leaves in boiling water, was believed to be al most a cure-all. Sufferers from asthma smoked the dried leaves. The leaves as well as the stems of the plant acted as a sedative, possessing a mild narcotic quality. The bird called the goldfinch developed a fond ness for the seeds of the mul lein plant. The tall, stout, flower stem was often dried and used as a unique walking cane. The mullein could al most be called "the weed of many uses." All this and more is true of this very common plant called the common mullein, a rela tive of the snapdragon and a member of the figwort fam ily. The "beautiful w e e a' grows in neglected pastures and foreotten meadows or alongside a country road. Probably this plant had its origin in Europe but at the present time it can be found in nearly every country of the entire world. Because of its velvety leaves, which are as soft as the ears of a cocker spaniel, the plant has acquired such descriptive names as "blan Hubert Says Nixon Nomination Rigged Seattle - KiPf - Nomination of Vice - President Richard Nixon as the Republican can didate for president already is a "rigged show," Sen. Hu bert Humphrey (D-Minn.) has . declared. Humphrey, one of the Dem ocratic party's two announced presidential candidates, told a news conference that Nixon "has been told he is the heir apparent, the crown prince.' The Minnesota Democrat said New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller ' has been told he is a pretender to the throne and he is not wanted. As for himself. Humphrey said his hat is in the ring as a presidential candidate and he would not accept nomination as a candidate for vice presi dent. Portland -fUPD- Federal Me diator Elmer Williams said a joint negotiating session has been scheduled for his office Thursday at 10 ajn. between t h e striking Stereotypers Union and representatives of the Oregon Journal and Ore- gonian. Fir Small Worlds Around Us By lynn M. Watkins ket-leaf." "Adam's flannel," "old man's, or old lady's flan nel" and "velvet leaf." It is the easiest weed of the coun tryside to identify. It stands out among weeds like a bum blebee in a cereal dish. How It Grows In its second year of life a tall, tough stalk rises, from a large rosette of woody leaves, on which the small, yellow flowers are borne. The flowers at the base ' of the stalk open first, while those at the top of the stem are still buds. The flower stalk itself is often called "the torch" or "Jacob's staff." For a weed the mullein is a little delicate. It will only grow in a location where there is ample room for the rosette of leaves to form. It is not too particular as to the soil but it does insist on room, otherwise the flower stalk will not develop. After the flower wilts the entire plant dies. This is usually in its sec ond year. Of all the many uses man has found for the common mullein, the small boy who aspires to be like his tobacco smoking elders, discovered that the leaves, after drying, could be rolled in a paper and smoked. From the oldest Roman down to today's small boy, the mullein plant has served many purposes. It is a weed of many virtues.
