14 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. The Family Council Editor's Note: The Family Council consists of a Judge, psychiatrist, three clergymen, a newspaper editor, a women's editor and two writers. Fach article is a summary of an actual rase history. The Council reports on problems that have been dealt on problems that counselors. Maud C. - I want to meet Linda secretly. Mrs. T. C-Maud doesn't know when she has been slapped. Maud C.-I am a 16-year-old girl and I am extremely upset about the breakup of a friend ship with one of the nicest girls I ever knew. Linda has been my very best friend for the past two years. We've had wonderful times together. But I don't think her mother ever liked me and she finally succeeded in breaking up our friendship. .1 think she did this because she is very ambitious for Linda. She wants her to go on the stage and expects her to devote all her time to music and dance lessons. I think this is very wrong. I got the idea of writing a note to Linda in school and telling her to meet me secret ly, but my mother is against this. Who is right? . Mrs. T. C. - I don't want Linda's mother to get the sat isfaction of feeling that Maud needs Linda's friendship so much. Maud is popular with both girls and boys-much more so than Linda-and she doesn't have to run begging after anyone's friendship In my opinion Linda's mother is one of the first snobs I have ever met. We opened our home to Linda, even took her to the country with us on week end trips, but her mother always look ed down on Maud. Even more than being concerned about Linda's music and dance les sons, she wants her to mingle with some of the more im portant families in our com munity. KOG Commended By Wiesendanger The Jackson County Keep Oregon Green committee has been commended by Albert Wiesendanger, executive sec retary of the Keep Oregon Green association, for its out standing support of the pro gram in 1959. In a letter to Dale Prentice, county chairman, Wiesendan ger noted that fire conditions during the 1959 season were among the most severe on record. High temperatures, low humidity and higher than usual winds characterized the season. Despite increased use of forest lands by loggers, hunt ers, campers and fishermen, there has not been a corre sponding increase in the num ber of man-caused fires, Wies endanger noted. In 1958. Oregon had 1,107 man-caused fires, while last year only 918 were reported, a decrease of 189 fires. Wiesendanger paid tribute to the work of local commit tee members toward prevent ing fire and called for con tinued attention to the prob lem of man-caused fires in 1960. Prentice, secretary-manager of the Southern Oregon Conservation and Tree Farm association, gave credit to the local lumber industry repre sentatives, and conservation ists for their efforts to alert the public to use greater care in the forests. AFRICA SIZE Capetown - Africa's length and width are about the same, 5.000 and 4,500 miles respec tively. The total area of the continent is somewhat in ex cess of 11,500,000 square miles. Annual Fruit Grower's Meeting FRIDAY, Y.G1C.A. MA, MEMBERS AIRE maSE T ATTEMD FRUIT GROWERS LEAGUE OF JACkSON COUNTY, Inc. Sunday, Jan. 10, 1960 wi a by responsible agencies ana I don t understand my daughter. She doesn't seem to know when she has been slapped in the face. The Council: We get the impression that Mrs. T. C. feels she is the person who has been slapped. Her bitter indignation suggests that she feels she has been put down by somebody of a higher status. If she felt a little more secure of her own status, she could afford to sit back and relax while she watches Linda's mother scramble up her ladder. Maud, on the other hand, seems to have taken this situ ation as a challenge. The idea of having a strong secret friendship is appealing to most adolescents and we be lieve that Linda gained con siderable glamour in her eyes since she has become forbid den territory. If parents wish to help ado lescent children with their problems, it is important for them to be as uninvolved emo tionally as possible. Mrs. T. C should try to withdraw her self and her feelings and take a cool look at this problem in order to help her daughter put it in perspective. If she takes a cool look, Mrs. T. C. will soon see that Linda's mother has a duty to guide her daughter in the di rection she considers right. She, like every other parent, might be wrong, but she must make an effort to instill the goals she values and encour age the abilities she sees in her own child. If Maud doesn't fit well into the pattern she considers desirable, she will naturally try to eject her. All of this is no insult to Maud. It is possible that a dif ferent kind of mother who also has ambitions would place great value on Maud as a friend for her daughter. Mrs. T. C. is too ready to as sume that Linda's mother has placed a kind of price tag on her daughter-and the price is low. Maud should be told that she must accept this situation, that secret friendships are not desirable and are rarely much fun, and that she should look around for another best friend. Pre viously, school needs were budgeted from the Siskiyou Union High school district which will no longer admin ister Yreka High school. Dr. Donald Meamber of Yreka, secretary of the board, said the budget is expected to be ready in adequate time to fix the amount of override tax required for the coming years. The board also discussed the possibility of making teachers' salary increases con tingent on merit and respon sibility as well as on seniority and education. CREST UNIT NO.l Advice for People Who Plan To Retire Given The Medford social securi ty office has reviewed some advice for people who plan to retire in "January and apply for social security benefits. "To speed the payment of the first ' retirement check, people should bring the neces sary proofs the first time they go to file a claim for bene fits," Edward B. Jacobson, district manager, said. A person applying for re tirement benefits needs to submit proof of age and of his or her earnings for 1959, he explained. Peak Applications "The end of the year and January are usually the peak time for retirement applica tions," Jacobson said. "People can help during the rush per iod, and at the same time avoid delays in getting their first payments by having the proofs with them." "The best evidence of age," he said, "is a birth certificate, but people who do not have birth certificates can prove their age in a number of other ways." Baptismal rec ords, birth date records in family Bibles, marriage cer tificates, voting records, and other old documents may also be acceptable. Usually the so cial security office will be able to suggest some docu "All it shares with Truly the finest sports car WE INVITE YOU TO SEE IT NOW! Eligible for Benefits Persons who believe their dependents may be eligible for benefits should present documents to show their rela tionship, such as proof of marriage or adoption, as well as birth certificates or other proof of age for the depend ents. A wife age 62 or more, chil dren under age 18, and dis abled children over 18 whose disability began in childhood are eligible for dependent's benefits if the person retir ing is eligible. To furnish proof of his earnings in 1959, a person who has worked for someone else can use the W-2 form given him by his employer. A self - employed person should bring a copy of his tax return for "1959, and also some evidence that the tax was paid, such as a cancelled check. He should also have an idea of how much he may earn in 1960, if he believes that he will be doing any fur ther work.
