Try and Stop Me -By BENNETT CERF- , A DEVOUT racing fan, famous for his incredibly bad judg-"-ttient, insisted upon betting his last $1,000 on an impos sible long shot. The nag started at 80 to 1 and not only finished last, but dropped cead as it crossed toe fin ash line. The fan was bemoan ing his luck when, to his . amazement, the bookie returned his stake plus eight crisp, new hundred dollar bills. "But the horse finished last," protested the puz zled fan. "So what?" shrugged the bookie. "You don't think I'd put down a bet en a horse like that? I took out an insurance policy on it!" ! Jim Backus tells the sad story of a Hollywood composer who Was commissioned to write a rousing new drinking song, but couldn't get past the first four bars. A wise man of Athens was asked when injustice would be abolished. He replied, "When those who are not wronged wax as Indignant as those who are." Convenient Terms to Suit You! ; JOHNSTON STORES 112 South Riverside The Medford city council last night granted Rosenbalm Aviation Inc. a 10-yrar lease to operate a crop-dusting firm at the city airport, and ap proved two liquor license ap plications. The council also ratified Mayor John Snider's appoint ments to the various city boards and commissions. The applications for liquor licenses approved were from the Tower Broiler and Ping's Gardens. The application from Ping's Gardens had been tabled at last month's meeting because the council said it had been advised by the Oregon State Liquor commission that there were too many liquor outlets for the size of the Medford population. The recomm end ratio is one outlet per 2,000 population. No Explanation Given The council did not explain why it felt it was all right to approve the licenses last night, nor did it say that the number of outlets had been re duced since last month. Tower Broiler, 1296 North Riverside ave., is the new name of the former Henry's Broiler, which had .been turn ed down on a request for a liquor license by the council last month. The establishment has since changed ownership, according to lawyer Robert Boyer, who spoke in favor of the applicants at last night's meeting. The request from the Tow er Broiler was approved unan imously and the one from Ping's Gardens by a five to two vote. Rosenbalm Aviation Inc. I will be the second crop-dust ing firm at the airport. The other is Medford Air Service, which has been in operation since 1929. Municipal Judge Alan B. Holmes, who is a partner in the new firm, and Walter Nun ley, representing the Medford Air Service, engaged in some debate last night regarding the financial ability of the owners of Rosenbalm Avia tion. Raise Coverage The council voted to raise the city's liability insurance coverage at the airport to $1 million. The raise had been recommended by the execu tive committe of the council. Councilman Robert Baccus, speaking for the committee, said the raise was necessary because a disaster at the air port could cause the city se rious financial difficulties if it is not properly covered. A request by the Mail Trib une to have the city vacate an alley behind its building was turned down by the coun cil by a five to two vote. The council expressed the fear that authorizing the vacation of one alley might set a bad precedent, leading to similar requests by other businesses. Upon recommendation of Fire Chief Gordon Barker, the council awarded Munnell and Sherrill, Inc., a contract to furnish the city with a new fire hose. It was noted that the bid of that firm was slightly more than that of two other bidders, but it was recom mended it be accepted as the brand of hose to be supplied by Munnell and Sherrill could be more easily loaded into the trucks. An extension of time to Dec. 31, 1959. was granted the Dan Herder Construction company for the installation of pumps at the Berrydale pump sta tion, which went into opera tion last year. The extension was warranted, Duff reported, because there was a mix-up in the delivery of the pumps from the manufacturer. Approves Purchase The council approved the purchase of two pieces of property for the right of way of the 10th st. extension, for $14,000 from Mrs. Alice Egan, and for $5,500 from Waldo E. and Elsie M. Tucker. After a report by the city manager, the council ap proved an extra width drive way for Walt Young, 525 South Central ave. The drive way, it was explained, will be used for access to a gro cery store parking lot. The council adopted an or dinance for the segregation of certain sanitary sewer assess ments in the Kenwood-Grand-view district, and corrected an error in assigning owner ship to a parcel of land in the same district. Assessments Approved Assessments in the Berry dale sanitary sewer system were approved by the coun cil and plans and specifica tions for the construction of a sanitary sewer to serve an area bounded by Crestbrook dr., Ellendale dr., Barnett rd., and Bear creek, and for the paving of Summit ave. from Mary place to Clark st. Butler Charges Nixon in Cahoots With Steel Firms Washington - (UPD - Demo cratic National Chairman Paul M. Butler has charged that Vice President Richard M. Nixon has secretly agreed to let the steel companies raise prices next year if they help elect him President. Butler made the charge in a speech to the Woman's Na tional Democratic club in which he discussed Nixon's role in settlement of the steel dispute. Cites Publication Asserting he had a "very respectable Republican source" to support his charge, Butler cited this paragraph from the Wall Street Journal's Tuesday edition: "Although the new agree ment will boost steel company costs sharply, the major pro ducers have agreed to forego any general price increases several months, possibly through 1960. This agreement was part of an unwritten un derstanding with Vice Presi dent Nixon and Labor Secre tary James P. Mitchell . . ." "Nixon secured the agree ment to hold off price boosts until after the election," But ler said. Mayor John Snider an nounced that the first meeting of the citizen's budget com mittee will be held Wednes day, Jan. 13.
