16 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Friday, Jan. 8, 1960 Family Council fl Jl 83 A 3 I Gilbert G.-Dad's just trying to prove he's boss. Mr. K. G.-One night a week is enough for him to have the car. Gilbert G.-I had my 17th birthday last week and I got my driver's license. The only problem now is the car. My father says I can have it once a week. Naturally, I want it for the week end, but now and then things come up during the week and I really tippH it Mv eirl friend and I belong to a photography club, for example, and i a likf to drive her to and from the mid-week meeting. If I use the car then Ive got to rive it ud for the week end. Dad is being silly about this thing. He'd rather leave the car standing in the garage anH have me get around any old way just to prove he's boss. Mr. K. G.-Last time I took inventory I noticed Gilbert had two perfectly healthy Ipps. With these he can walk lour blocks to his girl's home and get the bus on the corner. The last bus gets back at her corner at midnight and I think that's late enough for her on a week-day night. Gil claims he's going to lose his girl if he can't take her around in style. Frankly, I think she's better lost. I have never liked her and feel she makes too many demands on Gil. We feel she is behind his nagging about the car. However, my wife is sym pathetic toward Gil and thinks I'm making too much of an issue about this. The Council: Gilbert is a mighty lucky fellow to have a father ready to go out of his way to "prove he's boss." He should be aware that many fathers far more lenient on the car issue act out of disinterest, confusion about the "right" thing to do, dislike of being annoyed about fam ily matters and weakness of backbone. It's a rare father these days who is perfectly clear in his own mind about his role in the home and what he expects of his children. We don't favor a return to the old-fashioned erim and rigid father who was feared, and nerhaDS hated, by his children. But understanding and justice make a good com bination. The fact that Gil bert has the car once a week indicates he gets a reasonable amount of consideration at home. And the fact that he feels free to argue a point shows that his father at least gives his case a hearing. Gilbert's mother should also be grateful that, her husband is the kind of man who is ready to take his full respon sibility in this matter'. She is lucky to be able to say, "Your father told you and that's that." If she feels that Gilbert is being treated unfairly or that she wants to plead his cause for some special occa sion she should do it in pri vate. There is every advan taee in presenting a united front to the children. Mr. K. G. also appears to be on the right track in tak ing a step to prevent his son's getting into the habit of feel ing he must give in to every demand made by an aggres sive girl. Gilbert will find that some very nice girls will like him for himself well enough to go out with him car or no car. This in itself will be a valuable lesson in living.
