Often, my feeling is that it would UK. ALVAREZ be a poor move for a man of 50. He might find it impossible to get a good job again. I re member a number of able men around 50, or able wo men around 40 who, because of some annoyance or dis agreement with the boss, threw up a good job and then could not find another one. I remember, particularly, an engineer who, in his 50s, threw up his good job when his chief asked him not to leave at that time. The en gineer's wife wanted to go to a distant city to be operated on by some famous surgeon she had heard of. When, a month later, the engineer started hunting for a new po sition, he found : all doors closed to him. He was "too old." I recently read where a survey by the National Office Management Ass ociation showed that in Minneapolis only 15 per cent of 109 com panies have no maximum age limit in hiring new employees. The most common maximum age is 50, but in some com panies it is lower than that. In New York City 42 per cent of 148 companies are said to be closed to men by the time they reach 50, and 68 per cent of the firms will not hire a man who is 55. Women of 45 will find that two out of three firms will not take them. Some com panies in ban i;rancisco will not hire a man who is over 40. Unfortunate Waste To a physician like me, this looks like a most unfortunate waste of man power. It is ques tionable if our country can continue to do such a wasteful thing as to deny work to so many persons, many of whom must be well-trained and com petent to handle some techni cal job. In many cases an old er man wno is highly com petent to do some particular job is turned away because of the company's pension plan. The employment manager will say, "In your case our contributions to your pension fund would be bigger than your salary." But this is wrong. The Company could either hire him on a tempor ary month-to-month basis or they could let him pay into the pension fund the same amounts that the other work ers are paying. Another reason often for turning down a man over 40 or 50 can be the fear that he is so set in his ways that he will be unable to fit into a new organization or to get along comfortably with a new set of fellow-workers. I am happy to say that here and there I am beginning to hear of more and more companies that are getting enough sense to be willing to hire a man at almost any age, and with al most any physical handicap if he can do well every day the work that they need done. The company finished pre senting its direct case with testimony by Milo Bell, fisher ies consultant, of Mukilteo, Wash. Other company witnesses were Alton E. Alspaugh, hydro development engineer; power company executive Ar thur J. Porter and fish biolo gist J. A. Roy Hamilton, all of Portland. Monday, the Oregon Fish and Game Commission are ex pected to cross-examine Bell and Hamilton and present their own case. Fish Interests Opposed PNP wants to build the S250 million dam on the Snake river near the con fluence of the Salmon and Imnaha rivers along the Idaho-Oregon border. The 690 foot arch dam, highest of its type in the nation, would back up waters of the Snake and Imnaha but not the Salmon river. Fishery interests are oppos ed to the dam. PNP has asked the state of Oregon for a preliminary per mit, a step before applying for a state license to build. It also has applied to the Federal Power Commission for a construction license. The Water Resources Board hearing will be followed by a hearing of the Oregon Hydro electric Commission. Man Takes Life With Gun Used by Father La Puente, Calif.-OIPD-Phil-lip P. Marcellian, 58, shot and killed himself Wednesday with the same shotgun his father used to commit suicide 21 years ago, sheriffs depu ties reported. Marcellian, who had been ill, left a note to his wife, Alice, 50, which read: "Blame no one. It's for the best this way. No tears please."
