PROSPECT Frozen Pipe Trouble By FRANCES RING Prospect Many houses in the Cascade Gorge and Pros pect area have been having trouble with frozen pipes, Some of the .people who were Cone for a few days during the holidays came home to find their pipes had frozen and burst. The temperature has been below zero down as far as Copco. The Rev. and Mrs. George L. Fitch of the Church: of the Nazarene were in Roseburg recently where they visited his mother, Mrs. Grace Fitch, at a Roseburg hospital. Mrs Fitch is reported improved. The Nazarene church held a skating party and watch night service New Year's Eve. They started the evening with a potluck supper and then after skating retired to the church for devotions and watch night service. Mrs. Alice Conger, who is convalescing from major surg ery, has moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Georgia McKibbon, for a few weeks. Ray Shafer spent an unex pected visit at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Shaffer, last week end He is stationed at the Coast Guard base at Alameda, Calif. The Prospect Play school, with Mrs. Larry Drake in charge, reopened Jan. 5. The school will still meet on Tues days and Thursdays but there has been a change in the time. It will now be held from 10 a.m. to noon so that the home economics class from Prospect High school may assist Mrs. Drake as part of their home economics training. Mrs. Ira Ring arrived home Better Marriage Figures Expected Chicago - (Science Service) - America will have better figures on marriages and di vorces as the result of plans being put into effect for 1960 by the National Office of Vi tal Statistics. To fill in the gaps due to nine states without marriage central files and 15 states without divorce central files, sample records in those areas will be obtained from local officials who have the rec ords. Then these results will be applied by modern sam pling methods to give reliable figures that can be used by social scientists, market ana lysts, population experts and others. Many countries have mar riage and divorce data more complete than the United States, Dr. Hugh Carter of the government's national office admitted to the American As sociation for the Advance ment of Science here. The new program will allow U.S. marriage and divorce figures to be compared with interna tional records. The needs of hundreds of users of informa tion on family formation and dissolution will be further met by a campaign to extend the registration area to un covered states. New Comet Named For Discoverer Cambridge, Mass. -(Science Service)- A new comet, the first to be reported in 1960, has been discovered in the southern sky. The object has been named Comet Burnham after its discoverer, Robert Burnham of Prescott, Ariz., who found it while working at Lowell observatory. Flag staff, Ariz. Burnham also spotted the first ' comet of 1958. Burnham first spotted the comet Dec. 30, then photo graphed it again Jan. 2. It is too faint to be seen directly, even with telescopic aid, and will appear to be quite close to the moon for the next few days. News of the comet's discov ery was reported to astrono mers by Harvard college ob servatory here, clearing house for astronomical information in the Western Hemisphere. Comet Burnham's position in the constellation of Pisces, the fishes, was calculated by H. L. Giclas. Man-Made Sea Under Construction in NY Great Neck, N.Y. (Science Service) - A man-made sea is under construction here to- aid in the development of more efficient submarine detection equipment. The main limita tion on underwater detection devices Is the water environ ment itself. Sound travels through water for compara tively short distances only. The "set" being built here by Sperry Gyroscope company is to be 400 feet long. 200 feet wide and 25 feet deep. It will facilitate testing of equip ment in a controlled environ ment, free from unpredictable noises. from Sacred Heart hospital Jan. 3. Her son, was born Dec. 28 and weighed 3 pounds, will remain in the hospital until he weighs 5 pounds. He has been named Gary Eugene.' Danny and Billy Draper spent four days last week at the home of their grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. George Brown. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Draper, Eagle Point, came after them Sun day and spent the day visiting relatives in this area. Mr. Brown is reported feeling much better after recent surgery. Mr. and Mrs. James Spargo and Mr. and Mrs. James Con naway of Union Creek resort are visiting in North Holly wood, Calif., for a few weeks. 6 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Thursday, Jan. 7, 1960 Soil Drainage Method Reported Washington -(Science Serv ice) Excess water and crop damaging salt accumulations can be drained from irrigated soil by the use of mole drains with vinyl plastic liners, the U.S. Department of Agricul ture reported here. On one experimental area near Logan, Utah, the outflow from each of five such drains 300 feet long, 22 inches deep and 3 inches in diameter, was said to be about 2Vz gallons of water a minute. The drains also removed 117 pounds of salt a day from the Vz acre plot. Water drained into a ditch at the edge of the test area contained 10 times as much salt as water applied, the USDA reported. The saucer-shaped, 18-foot "radome" on top contains a long distance radar antennae which enables the plane to fly ahead of the fleet and detect the enemy long before he comes into range. Causes of Speech Problems Spotted With Pictures Los Angeles-(Science Serv-ice)-Hidden physical defects that contribute to speech prob lems are being detected by X-ray movies. A movie technique, technic ally known as cinefluorogra phy, is being used by the Cleft Palate Rehabilitation Team at the University of California Medical Center here. The team consists of Dr. Franklin L. Ashley, Robert F. Sloan, Dr. Elise Hahn and Dr. William Hanafee. Tongue Coated The tongue of the patient is coated with barium, and the X-ray movies are made while he pronounces certain key vowel sounds "ah," "ee," and "oo." Simultaneous tape recordings of the sounds are also made. From movements of the tongue, pharynx, uvula and other components of the speech mechanism during for mation of these sounds, clues to anatomical defects contrib uting to speech difficulty may be obtained. Difficult to Detect Slight anatomical defects of the speech mechanism, such as excessive adenoidal tissue 'Man's Best Friend' Helps Own Kind, Too Robinson, 111. The dog may be man's best friend, but he doesn't do badly by his own breed at times, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Doaland will tes tify. When a puppy fell into their fish pond and was un able to climb out, two other pups barked encouragement and howled for help until a neighbor heard the racket and made the rescue, the Doa lands said. or subtle malfunctioning of the sofe palate, are often difficult to detect by conventional diagnostic techniques, the UCLA group pointed out. Study of the movies will, how ever, often reveal such de fects. Thus the cinefluorographic techniques have enabled the speech therapist to observe the progress of the patient and aid the surgeon and ortho dontist in deciding whether surgical and dental recon struction procedures may help the patient to obtain a more normal speech development.
