Nev. Air Tunnel Tests Missiles At High Speeds Buffalo, N. Y. - (Science Service) Missile and aircraft models may be tested at air speeds up to 14,000 miles per hour in a new hypersonic 6hock tunnel now in operation here. Hypersonic speeds are those five times faster than sound or greater. During test runs in the new tunnel, a missile or airplane model can be sub jected to airflow velocities ranging from 6 to 16 times the speed of sound. Hypersonic Airflow Built here by Cornell Aero nautical Laboratory, Inc., the tunnel's outstanding feature is its ability to maintain such hypersonic airflow at constant speed for sufficient time to permit precise aerodynamic measurements of model per formance. A hypersonic shock tunnel basically consists of a shock tube connected with a nozzle and test section. During ope ration, the shock tube pro duces a supply of high-temperature, high-pressure air that is accelerated to hyper sonic speeds when it flows through the nozzle into the test section. The model being studied is mounted in the test section. Resembles Cannon The tunnel resembles an ex tremely long cannon, about equal to one-third the length of a football field. Its shock tube measures 90 feet in length, and is about one foot in diameter. The nozzle and test section extend some 20 feet beyond the shock tube. Ohio Law Helps Cleveland Attorney Columbus, O. It's against Ohio law to delay a lawyer who is on his way to court, and costs the offender $100. A Cleveland attorney was speeding along the highway recently on his way to a hear ing in Columbus, when he was stopped by a policeman. He told the officer about the law and was sent on his way with an apology. The Medical Roundup by Emeritus Consultant in Medicine. MJ-.yo C1U.IC Emeritus Professor of Medicine. Mayo Glial Sudden Death in Infants and Small Children There are few tragedies so distressing to parents as the sudden death of an infant - esp e c i a 1 1 y when the mother gets to wondering if possibly, dur ing the night, the child could have been smother ed by her hav ing rolled ov- ir. ai.varez er on ni m. Such thoughts are devastating to the unhappy mothers who continue to blame themselves for the rest of their days. In recent years many studies by pathologists who have exam ined the little body shortly after death have shown that usually the mother's self-accusations were quite unjusti fied. In many cases the child had a very acute pneuemonia, a very acute meningitis or an acute inflammation of the in ner lining of the heart which killed over night. In a recent article, Dr. Louis Goodman of Pittsburgh reported that in 84 per cent of a series of 19 infants and children who had died suddenly, autopsy show ed a peculiar condition inside the heart, which he felt could explain the death of the child. It is called Endomyocardial Fibroelastosis. Trichomonas Vaginitis Because vaginitis, or inflam mation of the vagina, due to a tiny single-celled organism called a trichomonas is one of the commonest causes of leu corrhea, many women ask what can be done for it. Many say that they have been to gynecologists, but have not gotten permanent relief. Often I fear the reason why the woman did not get well or stay well with treatment was that the doctor did not take enough time to explain that she might be getting re-infected from her husband. The husband might have to be well treated at the same time that she was being treated. As Dr. Edward G. Maeder of Minneapolis, recently said, in many cases the best treat ment for the woman would be the circumcision of her hus band. Failing that, he -might wash himself thoroughly with soap every morning. Treat ment of the man would be more difficult if the little organism had gotten to living in his prostate gland. I have seen cases in which it was very hard to cure the woman of her vaginitis because the little organism had gotten up into her bladder and was liv ing there. Obviously, it was useless to clear it out of her vagina without, at the same time, clearing it out of her bladder. In some cases it may perhaps get into the glands in the neck of the womb or around the outlet of the vagi na. Fortunately, in the cases of many women, the little or ganism does not cause much distress. Perhaps eventually it dies out, or it dies out after a little treatment. It is only in some cases that the disease becomes a curse which is hard to get rid of, and makes the woman very miserable. Some times her vagina becomes so sensitive that she cannot stand intercourse. I cannot, in this column, give any instruction for treat ment, or recommend any of the several drugs that are commonly used today, because obviously different women have to be treated differently. What is needed- is treatment by a physician who will take the time to face and tackle the several difficulties that may lie in the way of working a complete curse. He must early face the possibility that her trouble is not that he does not cure her, but that every so often she gets re-infected. EARLY MARRIAGES OUT Denver - (UPD Confirmed bachelor Joseph A. Griffith told newsmen Tuesday if he ever gets married it probably won't be until he's 100. Grif fith was celebrating his 99th birthday. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or.
