10 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. The Family Council Editor's Note: The Family Council consists of Judge, a psychiatrist, three clergymen, a newspaper editor, a women's editor and two writers. Each article is a summary of an actnal .-ase historv. The Council reports on problems that have been dealt wi a by responsible agencies and counselors. Nalalie E.-She has no right to Mother's things. Elaine J. I have no me mento of Mother. Natalie E. - My. sister and I are both married with chil dren. We have never gotten along well and ' things have been worse since our mother's death a year ago. Mother had been a widow for five years and she died without leaving a will. She had little cash in a savings bank and this was divided be tween my sister and me. How ever, Mother's personal things -her clothing, a little jewelry and some household equip ment went to me. I felt I was entitled to this because I took care of Mother during her illness. Elaine seems to think that she's entitled to half of Moth er's things. She didn't have any responsibility for Mother and I don't think she has a right to anything. The stuff isn't worth anything anyway. Elaine J. - Natalie keeps insisting that the stuff isn't worth anything, but she draws a blank when I ask her about a lovely necklace Mother once got as a gift from Dad and about a wrist watch I gave her as a Mother's Day gift. Also, when I visited her, Mother said she wanted me to keep a certain china tea set because she got it as a gift when I was born. Natalie keeps throwing up at me that I did nothing for Mother. But I couldn't help Cinch To Make 9238 SIZES 12-20:40,42 in itriM.iir -Five days out of seven, this is the dress you'll reach for! It's easy to sew always looks crisp and dashing. COMICE : PEARS Rejects from our Gift Pack Bring Your Own Containers - Golden Delicious APPLES Timothy and Meadow Hay OPEN 8 A.M. TO 5 P.M. Monday through Saturday PINNACLE Packing Co., Inc. 220 N. Fir Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1960 that as I lived quite far from her and I was tied down with a baby the two years before her death. I would have done even more than Natalie if I had the freedom. I haven't a single memento of my mother and that cer tainly hurts. Natalie just walked off with everything in sight. The Council: This quarrel has all the ugly earmarks of a fight between two young sters - neither of whom can tolerate the others existence because each sees in the other only a rival for the parents' love. Now the parents are gone, but the basic fight between these two sisters can go on for ever if they don't make the at tempt to grow up emotionally and break the old pattern. The objects involved are, in themselves, of only slight im portance: Even if there are a few pieces of valuable jewel ry, the emotional weight that has been placed upon them is of far greater importance to both sisters than their mone tary value. Natalie must be aware that she should not have taken ev ery item of her mother's per sonal belongings without con sultation with her sister. Pos sibly she is entitled to a few things of special value as com pensation for the responsibil ity and heartache of caring for her mother through the last illness, but she should have shown some understand ing of the fact that a personal memento from a deceased par ent is terribly precious. But Elaine made a mistake to demand half of her moth er's belongings. Aside from the fact that it would be im possible to determine exactly half of the value of a group of used objects, Elaine puts herself in the ugly position of eyeing her sister's haul with childish envy. It should be enough for her to mention some item or items she would like to keep. Her sister should hand these over without the slightest reservations pos sibly offering more than has been asked. That would be action of ma ture and civilized women. Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) Kniis in the News Cozy but never bulky!
