MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Sunday, Jan. 3, 1960 Hatfield Asks Return of Lands Owned by U.S. Salem-IDPB-Gov. Mark Hat field said Friday he has ask ed all; members of Oregon's Congressional delegation to join him In efforts to restore to the state's economy several large areas of Oregon land un der federal ownership. The tracts, acquired by the federal government during World War II but no longer used for ' defense purposes, should be released so they can be restored to the tax rolls and put into productive use, he said. " Some of the areas have po tential use as industrial sites, the governor said. He cited the 96,000 - acre Boardman bombing range in Morrow county, which will be near the John Day pool when that dam is completed. This area has great potentiality for in dustrial development. Action Initiated Action has been initiated by the Morrow county court to obtain release of the Board man tract The Oregon de partment of Planning and De velopment, assisted by a team of technicians from other state agencies, is working ac tively on the project. Investigations also are un der way on several other fed erally-owned tracts, including the now-unused Beaver am munition storage and loading area on the lower Columbia river. Assistance Asked "I have written to our two senators - and four congress men asking for their assist ance in . putting these lands back into economic use," Hat field said. "This is an oppor tunity for all of us, as rep resentatives of the people of Oregon, to join forces in a project that will make a ma jor contribution to the eco nomic development of our state." He added that action might be required in some instances, but there also was a possibili ty of obtaining release of the lands through negotiation or exchange. PROSPECT Couple in Auto Crash By FRANCIS RING Prospect - Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Baker from the Pros pect ranger station were "shook up" in an auto acci dent Dec. 27 when the car in which they were riding was struck head-on by another car near Salem. They were visit ing Mrs. Baker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J .W. Strange of Salem, and had just attended the wedding . of a brother, Robert Strange. Home from Northwest Naz arene college for the holidays is Darlene Nye, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo P. Nye. She is a senior. Another visitor home for the holidays is Celleste Bur rill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Burrill and a fresh man at Walla Walla college . at College Place, Wash. Kevin and Gina Burrill re cently recovered from a se vere case of chicken pox. - Week end visitors at the Burrills home were Mr. and Mrs. Alvy Bowman and fam ily and Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Bigger, Medford. They skied above Union creek Sunday. The Prospect Garden club had its annual family turkey dinner last week at the-community hall. About 30 peo ple attended. Mrs. Florence Venham, Medford, spent the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. George Ring Jr. Mrs. Ring is her granddaughter. She had Christmas dinner with her great - great - grandson, Mike Ring and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Monte Ring of Red Blan ket road. George Brown .is conval escing at home after under going major surgery at Rogue Valley hospital last week. Mrs. Marion Bean Nye, Medford, spent the holidays with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hedgpeth of Ulrich rd. Red Blanket Mills No. 1 and 2 are shut down for repairs.
