LEGAL NOTICES 5-INSTRUCTIONS 13 WANTED SITUATIONS Sunday, j. 3, 1960 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. 11 ppjl Small Worlds ISi Arund us Pfef'jl By Lynn M. Watkins EXNliJ - You Have a Jungle Right in Your Own Yard You have a jungle in your own yard. It is peopled with beings as strange and just as interesting as the inhabitants of any tropical jungle any where in the world. The ani mate are not as big, and not at all dangerous but they are all there, just waiting for you to discover them. You need no equipment, un less it be a reading glass, no money and very little time. Your exploration can be taken in five minute trips, if you prefer. There are many kinds of jungles, depending of course on where we have been, what we have read or what we want to believe. Ordinarily a jungle is a hot, steamy place where the humid air brings trees and plants to an exaggerated size, held together with vines that crawl snake-like over everything and hold it all to gether. These jungles are the pictured spots where Tarzan of the Apes swung from tree to tree and wild beasts prowl ed unmolested. We read of the rain jungles of equatorial Africa and Cen tral South America. Jungles which are brought about be cause of prodigious rainfall together with a hot sun. Veedpatch Jungle To the small child the weed patch in the vacant lot next door is a jungle. It is a place of mystery where strange creatures hide and where danger lurks. Descending down the scale we find another jungle at our feet. This is the tangled mass of grass-roots that carpet our lawn, or a vacant field. This is a true jungle to the little things that have their home there. Insects of many thousands of kinds clamber and wriggle through the labyrinth of grass roots, living their interesting and mysterious lives at our very feet. Some time, when you are fed up with the routine tasks that constitute your daily lives, stop for a few minutes and go out into your own yard. Get down on your hands and knees and look at the grass roots of your lawn. As your eyes become focused you will see a new world moving be fore you; a hurrying, hungry world of insects scampering, climbing and scurrying on their journeys toward an un known destination. A Busy World This world is as busy as any modern cit" street. In stead of motor cars, buses and people, here are creatures with strange shapes. Some are grotesque, some are actually hideous. Few of them will hurt you. They are too busy with their own affairs even to notice your presence. Even if you cannot identify a hundredth of them, don't become discouraged. You are ! only seeking amusement any way. Watch where they are going and what they are do ing. If you are a close observ er you will find crime here 'too. There are many killers in this little world. To survive they prey on everything they meet. Others will be gathering bits of food and carrying it away to a storage bin. Some will be making love, some will be robbing their neighbors and some will be hiding behind a grass blade or a kernel of sand, to ambush a passerby. Here is a jungle which you 15.
