Tuesdey, Dec 29, 1959 Need Okay For Title Ring Bout Stockholm HIPD Only the approval of the New York State Athletic commission ap peared to be missing today to complete the picture of a re turn heavyweight champion- ship bout between Ingemar Johnasson and Floyd Patter son ' in New York City late next June. -Verbal agreement on such a bout was reached Monday between Johansson and mem bers 'of the new promoting group. Feature Sports Inc organized by attorney Roy Chon. But Johansson ' wants the New York commission to as sure, him that everything is in order before he goes through a formal contract signing, which probably will . take place when the champion vis its New York in mid-January. ''We have been burned be fore and want some further in formation from the New York State Athletic Commission," said Edwin Ahlqvist, Johan- son's adviser. Ahlqvist said that Cohn and his associates "seem very honest" "But Velella and his associ ates also did at the first stages of our negotiations," he added. - Ahlqvist was referring to Vincent Velella, a New York politician from whom the Cohn group purchased Fea ture Sports Inc.' JJ -PlNT Semi-Final Games Set Tonight in Phoenix Tourney Phoenix Eagle Point and Illinois Valley moved into the semi-finals of the Holiday Classic at Phoenix by defeat ing Rogue River and Phoenix. Eagle Point defeated Rogue River, 58 to 48, in the first game, and the Eagles will meet Glendale tonight at 7:30. The Pirates had a first round bye. Illinois Valley' downed Phoenix, 41 to 32, in the sec ond basketball game, and the U.W. Man Gets Award In Football Pasadena, Calif.UPD - The presentation Monday to Wash ington quarterback Bob Sch loredt of the W. J. Voit Me morial Trophy, symbolic of his being picked the top foot ball player in the west, cli maxes a great Cinderella story. Schloredt, expected to be the Huskies' starting quarter back in the Rose Bowl game against Wisconsin, was one of four signalcallers on coach Jim Owens' squad at the start of the season. Bob Hivner was picked to be top man at the spot. Hivner was the leading candidate off his 1958 record of being runner-up to Cali fornia's Joe Kapp. As a sopho more, Hivner had amassed 834 yards running and pass ing, f Schloredt, who showed flashes of brilliance as a sophomore also, at best was only expected to spell Hivner in the Huskies' backfield. But in the first game of the season Hivner broke a finger and was lost to the team for the next four games. Bob Was Tht Man Although almost totally blind in one eye, Schloredt did such a thorough job of leading the Huskies that they finished the regular season with their best record in more than 30 years, losing only one game for a 9-1 record. Schloredt was the iron man of the team, playing more time than any other member of the squad, 455 minutes, in cluding a full 60 minutes against Stanford and 58 in the Southern California game. The sandy - haired, quiet spoken quarterback account ed for a total of 988 yards, 733 passing and 255 running. In completing 39 passes in 75 attempts for 733 yards and five touchdowns, Schloredt ranked second only to San ford's Dick Norman, the na tion's top big college thrower. 3-Deep Line LSU Advantage New Orleans - (UPD - Louisi ana State is counting on a three-deep line to offset Mis sissippi's ponderous weight advantage when the two titans meet in the Sugar Bowl Fri day for what will probably be a grim defensive struggle. The Sugar Bowl classic will pit two of the country's finest backs - LSU's Billy Cannon and Ole Miss' Charlie Flowers - against the most impreg nable defenses in the South. Ole Miss had grudgingly al lowed three touchdowns - 21 points - this year, the best record since Tennessee held its opponents scoreless in 1939. The Tigers have been a bit more magnanimous giv ing up three touchdowns and three field goals, a total of 29 points. OLSON VS. WEBB San Francisco -UPB-Former world middleweight champion Carl (Bobo) Olson has signed to meet Spider Webb in a 10 round light heavyweight bout at the Cow Palace, Feb. 15. Investors Advisory Institute comments on McKesson & Bobbins, major pharmaceuti Cougars will tangle with the Henley Hornets in the second game tonight. Henley also had a first round bye. In the first game, the Eagles moved out to lead 19 to 12 at the end of the first quarter. Jim Nease, Steve Geren, and Dick Wilson picked up most of the Eagles points while Dave Carter and Barry Frantz lead the Chieftains first period scoring. Add Nint Points The Eagles were able to add only nine points to their score in the second frame and the Chieftains poured through 14, cutting the Eagle lead to 2 points at the end of the first half. Third quarter action saw Rogue River hit for 12 while Eagle Point was able to pro duce only 9. This put the Chieftains ahead 37 to 38 at the three-quarters break. Rogue River moved ahead to a 5 point lead on Carter and Ronnie Laws tallies, then with about five minutes "to go the Eagles began to score. The rally started with Wil son picking up six quick scores on a lay-in and four foul shots. With just over four minutes remaining the Eagles were trailing by only two points. In the last four minutes the Chieftains were able to add only three points to their score, Harry McCabe and Frantz produced the three. Scores Eight Points The Eagles poured through 13 points in the last three and a half minutes, Nease putting in eight. The Eagles tallied on 24 field goals and put in 10 of 22 foul shots. Rogue River hit 18 fielders and 18 of 30 free throws. In the second game neither team score consistently after the first quarter which saw the Phoenix Pirates leading 14 to 10. Jim Floyd and Mike Consbruck picked up most of the Pirate tallies while Bob Tucker and Mike Hanby did most of the scoring for the Cougars. Score Two Points In the second frame the Pi rates scored only two points when Gerald Sloper put in a rebound. The Cougrrs could produce only six but went into a half time lead at 18 to 16. Doug Lewis, Jerry Buck haults, and Chuck Baird each put in two points for the Cou gers. The Cougars added 12 third frame points to their score while the cold shooting Pi rates dropped in six. Cons bruck arid Floyd did most of the scoring for the Pirates, and Buckhault and Hanby were the IV leaders. Pirate scorers picked up an even 10 points in the final period but IV was again the leader by picking up 11. Fourteen fielders were dropped in by the Cougars along with 17 of 37 foul shots. The Pirates also made 12 field goals but made only eight of 26 free throws. U.W. Favorite Of Writers Pasadena, Calif.-flJPD-Coach Milt Bruhn, if he needed any thin? to insoire his Wisconsin football team in the Rose Bowl New Year's Day, today had '. a ready-made "fight" talk given him. The Wisconsin coach was anything but displeased when a majority of those in attend ance at the Rose Bowl lunch eon of the Southern Cali fornia Football Writers Asso ciation Monday, picked Wash ington to win the New Year's Day classic. Of 94 valid ballots, 55 pick ed the Huskies to become the second coast team to win the Rose Bowl game since the closed agreement between the Big Ten and the Coast went into effect in 1946. Wisconsin received 39 votes of support. Chatter cal house: Sales for its fiscal year ending March 31, 1960 should hit a new peak. Taylor, 36, was fined five pounds ($14) Mon day for swearing at a police man while Taylor was dress ed as Santa Claus. His broth er Sidney, 39, also dressed as Santa, was fined three pounds ($8.40) for pushing the cop. New York -flJPD- Four air raid sirens wailed for more than an hour Monday night throwing a scare into many lower East Side residents. Po lice assured callers that, the sirens had gone off by acci dent, apparently the result of an electrical m a Ifunction brought on by damp weather. PIGGYBACK RIDE St. Mary's Larry Brennan (No. 25) found a resting spot on the back of Seattle's Lloyd Murphy (No. 33) during the action in the first period in San Francisco Monday night. St. Mary's upset Seattle 65-60 in the first round of the West Coast Athletic conference tourney. Bears Take 62-48 Win From UCLA Tops By GENE BRYANT United Press International West Coast basketball pres tige went up a notch today, due in large part to the efforts of a defense minded Califor nia club and a high-scoring UCLA quintet. The Bears, third-ranked nationally, threw up as tight a defense as Illinois is likely to see this season while breez ing to a 62-48 decision over the Big 10 club in the Los An geles Basketball Classic Mon day night. The previously undefeated Illini, ninth in the rankings, lost possession numerous tim es to the ball-hawking Bears and were seldom able to break loose for a clear shot. Govenor Vaughn, the team's leading scorer, was held to eight points, although Mannie Jackson managed to collect. 17. Darrall Imhoff paced- the Bear attack by dropping in 23 points, 17 of which came in the first half. The 6-10 center also controlled both back boards while serving as the bulwark of the California de fense. In the first half of the twin bill, played before a crowd of 10,530 at the new Los Angel es Sports Arena, UCLA used 16 players while overpower ing a weak Michigan team, 93-68. Kemp Miller led the Bruin scoring parade with 15 points. The Wolverines' Terry Mil ler poured in 32 points in a futile effort to keep Michigan in the game. USC Rolls On Second-ranked West Vir ginia scored a 66-47 victory over Stanford and Southern California trounced North western, 81-62, in afternoon contests. , Ail-American Jerry West scored 27 points to lead a second-half surge by the Moun taineers. Stanford stayed in front during most of the first half and remained within a point of West Virginia until the Mountaineers opened up with nine minutes remaining. USC had little trouble in posting its sixth straight win against Northwestern. John ny Werhas led the Trojans with 22 points. ' Santa Clara will' clash with St. Mary's and San Francisco will meet Loyola in tonight's semi-finals. : Finch Jury Believed Near Los Angeles (UPD Attor neys said there was a good chance a panel of 12 jurors finally would be seated today in the murder trial of Dr. R. Bernard Finch and his sweet heart, Carole Tregoff. Grant B. Cooper, Finch's attorney, said testimony can not start until four alternate jurors are chosen and the trial judge rules on defense mo tions for a separate trial and change of location of the trial. Finch, 42, a wealthy physi cian, and Miss Tregoff, 23, went on trial Dec. 8 on a charge that they plotted and carried out the fatal shooting July 18 of Finch's estranged wife Barbara, 33. Defense attorneys retained only five of their original 30 peremptory challenges going into today's session. The pros ecution had indicated its wil lingness 13 times to accept prospective panels, but each time the defense exercised one of its challenges to un seat without cause a prospec tive juror. JEWELER KILLS SELF Genoa, Italy (UPD Ulderico Testelli, a 60-year-old jeweler, killed himself Monday on the way to a hospital for treat ment of injuries from a first suicide attempt, police report ed. Testelli threw himself un der the wheels of a truck. He was pulled out alive - and placed in an automobile. En route to the hospital, he pro duced a gun and shot himself three times in the stomach. The local office will be open on those Mondays front 8 ajn. until 4:45 pjn. The only exception will be Feb. 22 which is a legal holiday. The office will then be open on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The period for filing 1959 federal income tax returns will extend from Jan. 4 to April 15, inclusive. in obvious pursuit of his third straight national scoring championship.
