Micbaal D. - She is being unrealistic. - Marian S. - My boy friend and I are both sophomores in college - different colleges, unforunately. We are both 20 and have been going together since we were 15. In the first years of our dating we did very little pet ting. We were usually with a crowd and we would just kiss good night at the end of our date. Since we have been go ing to college, however, we see little of one another and then we want to be alone. By degrees the barriers have broken down and now Mike suggests that we go all the way. We are very much in love and plan to be married. But we must wait at least three years. That's a long time to wait. Yet I. don't want to do anything to spoil mar riage. Michael D. - Marian cer tainly doesn't need to worry about my love or loyalty. We have had five years of steady dating and I've never given her any cause for jealousy and always treated her with the utmost respect and con sideration. I never made any demands although I knew that more aggressive guys went further with girls who were by no means tramps. Anyway, I feel there'i a lim it to how good a man can be about this thing. Three more years is just too much and we both want very much to finish college and get a etart in jobs before we marry. Our families can't help u any fur- ther than college and w must work before we get mar ried. I think Marian is being kind of unrealistic about thi. Tha Council: The tone of Michael's statement suggests that he is holding a threat ov er Marian. He cites his long years of decent behavior and implies that he should now be rewarded - or else. W think he has worked himself up to a pitch where he now feels that he has been a suck er and demands that Marian make amends. It would be worse than foolish for Marian to submit to this form of blackmail. We gather that she is now afraid of the competition. Aside fmm tvio moral asDects of the case, Marian would be mak ing a big mistake to acceae to Michael's demands because she would be doing so out of fear. Th kiv mistake in this re lationship is the five years of steady dating wnicn preced ed this period. There is no good reason for this prolong ed period of steady dating at tViic am At flPeS 15 to 20. Marian and Michael could not possibly be certain that tney tuna the onlv ones for each other. They clung together ' out of fear of being left out I of dates entirely. Now they feel more or less stuck with ! one another and are fearful i about the future. Calling these feelings love does not make them that, i If love and the desire for a happy future together were uppermost in the minds of Marian and Michael this is sue would not arise. Michael would accept and respect Marian's standards. Marian would not fear that upholding her standards would result in the loss of Michael's affec tion. After this long period of steady dating, it is indeed dif ficult for Michael and Marian to venture into the turbu lence and insecurity of dating others. But we think that is just what this relationship needs - a break. If after a couple of years of free social relationships, Marian and Mi chael find they still want one another, they will be far bet ter prepared for marriage and for the restraints and unself ishness required for success ful married life. (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) Growth of Labor Force Predicted Washington -4UPD- The Am erican labor force is expected to grow by about 23 million people by 1975. The figure is expected to include a larger number of married women but fewer men 65 and older. The forecast was made at the annual meeting of the American Statistical Associa tion here todav bv a Bovern- ment labor economist, Miss Gertrude Bancroft.
