Text of Rockefeller's Announcement Albany, N.Y-fllPD-The text of Gov. Nelson A. Rockefel ler'! statement that he is not a candidate for the 1960 Re publican presidential nomina tion: "I have come to a definite decision with respect to my candidacy for the Republican .nomination for the presiden cy. I have done so after long and serious reflection, and my decision has been dictated by clear and sharp convic tions. "These convictions bear upon the two political roles that prescribe my responsibil ity. The first of these is the position of Governor of New York state. This is an office and an honor plainly com manding my full respect and utterly deserving of my faith ful service. "The second role that I must servie is that of any American, namely: responsi ble citizenship on the nation al scene. And this responsibil ity assumes a particularly keen and explicit form when our nation confronts issues and challenges of truly his toric size and seriousness. Profoundly Concerned "If 1 were not profoundly concerned with these issues, I would have no reason to be in public life in any capacity. "I have had to weigh, how ever, and to decide how best to express this concern. This question has largely inspired the several trips 1 have re cently made through the country. For only by meeting and talking with many citi zens of many states could I form a reasoned conclusion as to how I may best serve both the State of New York and the nation. "These trips have made it clear to me. as I believe they have to others, that the great majority of those who will control the Republican con vention, stand opposed to any contest for the nomination. "Therefore, any quest of the nomination on my part would entail a massive struggle-in primary elections throughout the nation - de manding so greatly of my time and energy that it would Big Blizzard Rages In Hew Mexico -Vaughn, N.M. Motorists blinded by blowing snow were . guided to cramped shelter in Vaughn and Encino late Saturday in the midst of a howling blizzard worse than t the storm of Dec. 15 which marooned 800 persons here, some as long as 48 hours. I Once again the stranded sought shelter where they could find it in a battle for survival. Winds up to 35 miles an hour and "mueh colder" tem peratures added to the grav ity of the situation but resi dents calmly began getting ready to take travelers in wherever they eould. make impossible the fulfill ment of my obligations as governor of New York. Net a Candidate "My conclusion, therefore, is that I am not, and shall not be, a candidate for nomina tion for the presidency. "This decision is definite and final. By this decision, and my intended course of action, I deeply believe I can best serve the needs of both party and country. "As to my party, I am a Republican seriously con cerned about the future vig or and purpose of my party. I believe that we live in an I age that challenges represent ative government and the two-party system that it is American expression. In such an age, neither of our great parties can hope to meet the issues and the opportunities of the future merely with the devices and programs of the past. The vitality-the sense of realism and the sense of pur-pose-of so great an institution as the Republican party is, therefore, quite truly a mat ter of national interest and national need. To the invigor ating of this party's spirit, K's Relatives Spend Capitalistic Christmas Paris (DPD Nikita Khru shchev's daughter and son-in-law celebrated Christmas in Paris capitalist style. They went to a -Roman Catholic midnight mass and then night clubbed until early morning. Christmas is just another working day back in Moscow. But Alexei Adjubei, editor of the government newspaper Izvestia, and his wife, the Soviet premier's daughter Rada, chose to ignore this fact during their visit here. Night Spot Tour Escorted by Izvestia Paris correspondent Sergei Zykov, who seems to know his way around the bright spots, they went on an early - morning tour of Montmartre and Latin Quarter night clubs. One newspaper reported that Christmas morning "found them covered with confetti, enjoying themselves by throwing paper pellets at each other." , - ' Before touring the night clubs, the couple had gone to midnight pontificia'l mass at Notre Dame cathedral. Like other.-churches in the city, it was packed." In -Moscow, only Japan's Ex-Premier To Visit Formosa Taipei-flJPD - Former Japan ese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida will arrive here Sun day for a 2-day visit to Na tionalist China. Yoshida will com here on the last leg of a month-long goodwill tour of Australia, New Zealand and southeast Asian countries. During his stay in Formosa the elder Japanese statesman will meet with President Chiang Kai-Shek and other government leaders. Ike Gets Engraved Plaque from Cabinet Washington flIPD President Eisenhower's cabinet has given him an engraved crys tal plaque as a momento of his recently-completed peace mission to 11 nations this month. The oval plaque ' was de scribed as being made of sol id crystal, 6V inches wide. On it, there is engraved a chart of his trip to the nations he visited in Europe, Asia and Africa between Dec. 3 and 22. His Initials, D.D.E., and the wate, December, 1959, also are engraved on the plaque. The plaque rests on an ebony base to which is at tached a silver medallion in scribed "with the affectionate regards of his cabinet." Ohio City Reports A Grave Problem Willoughby, Ohio-flW-City fathers say they have a grave problem on their bands. The municipal cmentery is run ning out of space. HAIL SHIPMENTS Four T fifths of all the bi tuminous coal produced in the U.S. makes at least a part of the journey from mine to market by railroad. one Catholic church had pub lic services, and Christmas Day was given no official holiday recognition. Oysters and Cognac The Adjubeis completed their capitalist holiday with a Christmas dinner at Zykov's home, starting with oysters, going through turkey and French wines, and ending with choice cognac. . Last night, they joined the glittering audience at the opera for Bizet's "Carmen" which at least has a working girl heroine. In between, the couple re laxed at a Hotel Crillon suite that has tapestries, wall to wall carpeting, a yellow and black marble bathroom, and a terrace overlooking the Place de la Concorde. Adjubei is here for a week to attend a journalists' con ference sponsored by a French commercial station, Radio Luxembourg. Parisians were wondering whether he was going to bring father-in-law Khrushchev any ideas for his own April visit to Paris. and to the clarifying of its purposes and policies, all of us who are Republicans should devote our thoughts and energies. In this spirit, I expect to support the nom inee, as well as the program, of the party in 1960. Cities World Issues "As to our country, the na tional and world issues be fore us, I deeply believe, hold omen of both menace and hope, both danger and oppor tunity. We all know the range of these issues: world policies, military defenses, economic growth, educational excel lence, racial relations, social needs, public morals. Not one of these spheres tolerates complacence toward the fu ture. Every one of them in vites scrutiny. "Such a scrutiny must be full and foresighted. For such a time as this calls for a pro found and continuous act of national self-examination. "I shall contribute all I can , to this political act. I shall speak with full freedom and vigor on these issues that confront our nation and the world. "To all those who have urged upon me a different course with respect to candi dacy, I am grateful. I hope and trust they will respect my decision and its reasons. No. 2 Spot Ruled Out. "Quite obviously, I shall not at any time entertain any thought of accepting nomina tion to "the vice-presidency even if the honor were of fered, for this would clearly run counter to all the consid erations inspiring my present decision. "I hope my friends will re spect this absolutely definite resolve. "I believe I have chosen the right course. "I shall do all in my power, as a citizen and as governor, to make it a creative and con structive one." Britisher Who Made Trip in Junk Plans to Settle Down Eureka, Calif. -(UPD- Brian Piatt, plucky 29 - year - old Britisher who "got tired" of the foreign service and em barked alone on a 7,000 mile voyage across the Pacific Ocean in a 36-foot junk, said Saturday he was planning to settle down and start a small business in Canada. Piatt, who concluded his incredible 70-day trip Friday with an assist from the Coast Murder Suspect Asks Lie Test Plainsville, Ohio (DPD Truckdriver Floyd E. Har grove, 34, Saturday admitted he was the lover of brunette housewife Mrs. Charles R. Clark but sought a lie detec tor test to prove he was not the sniper who killed her scoutmaster husband Christ mas Eve in the kitchen of the Clark home. Hargrove, a divorced fa ther of five, was held in Lake county jail for questioning. His scheduled, lie detector test at Shaker heights, a few miles southwest of here, was indefinitely postponed Satur day to allow further question ing. Police Chief Frank D. Hathy of nearby Mentor said he believed Hargrove to be the rifleman who shot the 35-year old Clark through the temple as Clark helped his wife fix supper for their four children. Piatt said the main mast on the junk snapped and fell overboard some 600 miles north of Midway Island. He managed to retrieve it but said he debated going to Mid way or to the Aleutians for repairs. But he continued to head to the United States because he wasn't sure about repair facilities in "those two spots." The junk ran out of fuel Friday as it neared Humboldt Bay just after Piatt saw his first land in two months and nine days of sailing. Piatt ad mitted that his running out of fuel so near his final des tination made him "a little nervous." The Coast Guard towed him in and immediate ly treated him to a typical U.S. style Christmas dinner. Began in Hong Kong Piatt's voyage began in Hong Kong. He made stops at Formosa, Okinawa, and Japan before starting the non-stop sail to the states. He navigated by dead reckoning throughout the voyage. Badly Burned Girl In Fair Condition Salem -(DPI) A Woodburn girl was reported in "fair" condition Saturday in Salem Memorial hospital with se vere leg burns suffered Christ mas day when her nightgown caught fire from a fireplace ember. The girl, Adrienne Durett, 8, was burned on both legs and one hand. Adrienne's 13-year-old sis ter, Rosita, immediately snatched up a blanket and smothered the flames on the little girl. The girls received nightgowns for Christmas. Piatt served five years in the B t i t i s h Administrative Service in the federated Ma lay states before sailing from Singapore to Hong Kong on a yacht last September. Piatt's voyage to Hong Kong dissatisfied him because it was "too easy." He purchased the sturdy teakwood junk in Hong Kong, added an auxiliary en gine, then began the trip. The Britisher, who said he has had enough of foreign service, will sail to San Fran cisco sometime next week, then look into business pos sibilities in Canada.
