It's hard to believe - in the midst of the bright homes and the prosper ity of today - that 15 years ago, MeAuliffe flashed from Bastogne the surrender reply heard 'round the world: . "Nuts!"- . : - Cellar Nearby . . Up from the cellars came hundreds of precious coverings.' Years later, grateful Bulge veterans gave every Bastog nard a: pair of bedsheets. .Because of the combined Belgian and. When the GIs left th blood ied ground of Bastogne and moved into Germany for the final kill, th residents climb ed out of hiding and took up their old way of life as shop keepers and traders. A thousand persons have since been added to the town's pre-war population of 5,000. New houses have been built and trees planted. But rather than heal all the scars of war, Bastogne keeps the Sherman tanks and a star shaped monument - dedicated to th thousands who have mad Bastogne their horn for eternity, Police Get Request For an 'Extra Man' Corning, N.Y.-New York Stat Police have been called on for many things, from re trieving lost horses and babies to rounding up crim inals and checking on stolen cars.
