Puck Man Fined For Article Montreal - (CPU National Hockey League' President Clarence Campbell, a former hockey referee, today sent right -wing Andy Bathgate and General Manager Murray Muzz - Patrick of the New York Rangers to the financial penalty box. -' Bathgate was fined $500 and Patrick $100 by the league for permitting the pub lication of a magazine article which accused several NHL players of "spearing" their opponents. He said that Dave Gardner is pressing Vannice at forward for a starting birth. Southern Oregon's junior varsity, Hawkinson's and An dy's are members of the Southern Oregon Indepen dent league but these games reportedly are non-counters. Elliott Set For Illinois, Reports Say San Francisco CUPD Pete Elliott, handsome master of the drama of suspense, is headed for Illinois - despite a lack of announcement. And when he goes it is probable that all hands at California will heave a sigh of relief that it's over at last, ev en though they loved the 33- year-old so-called boy wonder of the coaching ranks. For six m o n t h s they have known that Elliott was under consideration to succeed Ray Eliot (no relation) as head coach of the Mini. But young Pete hasn't been able to make up his mind. . "It doesn't appear there is much chance to keep Pete here,", says athletic director Greg Engelhard. "It's up to him to make the decision." Chancellor Glenn T. Sea- borg, who always has been close to athletics at the uni versity, has kept in touch with Elliott throughout the negotiations..-: 'Still Don't Know' "But I still don't know what Elliott will decide," says the p r i z e-winning nuclear scien tist. - ... ,. Assistant coach Dee Andros is just as much in the dark. "I wish he would make up his mind," Andros says. "We assistants , don't . know which way to turn." Pete's wife, Joan, isn't wor ried too much by the whole thing.. It is probable that she knows every, thought in her husband's head. ' "So how. are you going to like going back to that snow and cold?" we asked her. "Well, if Pete decides to go back, it will be fine with me," came the reply. "I've lived in that cold country before and it certainly doesn't bother me. "Wherever Pete decides - to go, I'll be happy to tag along - just so I can be with him." Not by The Records. Elliott has been regarded as the country's i 'and com ing"' young coach for -a half dozen .years now. The records don't show it. But those in the coaching ranks have high re-' gard for his ability. In four years as ahead coach, .Pete has won only 14 losing 27. But he stepped into a bad post at Nebraska and won four, losing six. Then he came to California, where he won only one game, losing nine. In 1958, the fol lowing season, his club did a complete about-face, posting a 7-3 record and going to the Rose Bowl - but bowing to Iowa. This year, his Golden Bears won their first game of the season; lost the next eight, then won the "Big Game" against Stanford in the finale. One big reason Schwartz walder is so high on his sec ond unit is the showing of its quarterback Dick Easterly: - "At the start of the season we went with Ger Schwedes, a halfback, as quarterback," the former paratrooper said, "because we didn't have any thing but sophomores there." Dave Sarette, in relief of Schwedes, showed so well that he became the first string sig nal, caller after the opening game with;' Kansas and Schwedes went back to his regular halfback spot. . -"Then Easterly began to de velop and right now he's just as good as Sarette," the coach said.1! Both are sophs. U In' addition to Sarette and Schwedes, who scored 100 points this season,' the number one backfield has sophomore flash . Ernie Davis, ' a second string All-American from El mira, N.Y.", and Art Baker, a junior, who is a heavyweight wrestling champion in addi tion to a fullback. Both Lines Siieable The line that normally plays in front of these four is the well-publicized "Sizeable Seven" anchored by AIL American guard Roger Davis who is also UPI's Lineman of the Year. . .. The 70,000 fans expected at the Cotton Bowl and the na tional television audience will probably see about as much of the Syracuse second, unit as the first, according to current thinking. Flanking Easterly on this unit, are Pete Brokaw and Mark Weber along with full back John Nichols. The second line, the "Unknown Seven,' has often been as impressive as the "Sizeable Seven." Many who saw Syracuse whip UCLA gave the bulk of the credit to the number two unit. Orioles' Man Sets Record In Leagues Chicago -(UPD- Knuckleball- er Hoyt Wilhelm of the Balti- more Orioles today officially became the only pitcher in history ever to compile the fop earned run average in both the American and Na tional leagues. The 36-year-old Wilhelm won his first earned run title with the New York Giants in 1952 with a 2.43 mark. And he was the best in the Ameri can league last season with a 2.19 percentage, according to official averages released here by the Howe News bureau. 15-11 Record Wilhelm, who had a 15-11 record last season, yielded on ly 55 earned runs in 226 inn ings to beat out runner-up Ca milo Pascual of Washington. Pascual had a 2.64 earned run mark and a 17-10 record. Bob Shaw of the White Sox finished third with 2.69, Art Ditmar of the Yankees fourth with 2.90 and Jerry Walker of the Orioles fifth with 2.92. All five are righthanders. Won't Give Up Team Entrv Idea Dallas, Tex. -TOPD- Conti nental League President Branch Rickey, a confirmed optimist, said today he has not yet given up the attempt to get Dallas-Fort Worth into the, new league. "I can't help but feej that the people in this area want major league baseball," Rick ey said after a talk to civic leaders and private huddles with potential backers. He told the men he needed an "expression of desire" from Dallas and Fort Worth.
