Codding Jr. former Medford resident, is the author of a new book, "Broadcasting Without Bar rier," which has been pub lished by the -United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Codding is the son of Mrs Maude Codding, 1015 Queen Anne ave., and the late George A. Codding, a former Jackson county district at torney. The author is a former member of the secretariat of the international telecom munication union and is at present assistant professor of political science at the uni versity of Pennsylvania. He was commission by UNr-St-O to write the book. More than 9.000 radio broadcasting transmitters and over 300 million receivers brintf information and enter tainment to the world's peo ples, according to the publica tion. International Broadcasting In addition to their domes tic services, most countries now engage in international broadcasting, beaming num erous programs daily to all parts of the globe. Many ob stacles prevent it from being f ullv used to oromote the free flow of ideas between coun tries, the studv roints out. Surveying the development of broadcasting, the study shows that 60 per cent of the world's transmitters and 80 tr tent of its receivers are concentrated in North Amer ica and Europe. The people of under-developed countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, lack efficient sets to pick up even local broadcasts. Codding estimates that some 350 million additional receivers would be needed to assure a set for each family In these countries and urges receivers be designed and mass-produced for this mar ket. Codding traces the rise of broadcasting from the time, only four decades ago, when it was but a whisper heard by a few devoted amateurs, to its present position as a vast world-wide medium with an audience of hundreds of millions. Dr. Hibbs Speaks at Rotary Meeting Dr. Ralph Hibbs, Medford, related his experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war at a meeting of the Rotary club this week. A captain in the Army medical corp at the time of his capture. Dr. Hibbs said he was one of the 8 per cent who survived the Battan march in the Philippines. Principal causes of death in the prison camps was malaria, dysentery and starvation, he said, and within six months half of the men in the camp had died. Rations consisted of a double handful of dried rice daily. Dr. Hibbs was in charge of the tuberculosis ward in the camp, and noted that medical and sanitation facilities were poor. He was Introduced at the meeting by E. O. Collins, pro gram chairman.
