Mary K. - I'll take loneli ness and dignity. Janet S. - She'll get bitter. May K. I am a 33-year-old widow with two children. My husband died three years ago. Only in the past few months have I been able to think in terms of marrying again. I realize that the odds are against me. Single men of an appropriate age are in short supply - and they certainly don't need a woman with chil dren. My sister tells me that unless I get "on the ball" to a long can look forward life of loneliness. In spite of my recognition that she is right I just don't find myself able to do some of the things she suggests. I'm not the aggressive type and sometimes I think it's better to keep one's dignity and re main lonely, if one must. Janet S. My sister talks lot about dignity, but I don't see anything especially dignified about a woman go ing around sad and alone. Eventually Mary will find herself getting bitter. She'll have nobody to blame but her self. I have begged Mary to join certain neighborhood group that includes some eligible men. But she feels that every one will realize she has come looking for men and will sneer at her. I think they will sympathize. I have also begged Mary to get in touch with an old flame of hers. I've heard this man is still single. What's the harm in her calling him? We both know that this man is very shy and unlikely to make the first move. The Council: It is certainly difficult for a woman who has enjoyed the comfort and security of marriage to move into the rough and tumble battle for a second mate. Jan et's emphasis on the need for aggressiveness has probably frightened Mary more than it has helped her. However, the fact of the matter is that Mary is lonely and that her life has probably settled into a rather dismal, narrow routine. This won't come to an end by continuing this way and merely hoping things will eventually im prove. Loneliness or loss of dignity are not the two alternatives. Neither do we think it is ne cessary or desirable for a woman to stage a big man hunting campaign unless she so intensely wants a second mate that she can be enthusi astic about entering the bat tle. The simple fact is that Mary needs a bit more in her life than child-rearing. With out a husband's companion ship and the normal social life that goes with it. a wom an in Mary's position must make an effort to enlarge her life. She must have friends and interests outside of her home. Mary should certainly join that neighborhood group and she needn't feel uncomfort able about it if she knows she i is going for companionship and ordinary social inter change. She should also avail herself of any other opportun ities the community offers in the way of courses or volun teer activities. Once Mary starts to live a more normal social life, she should find herself thinking less about her own dignity and will be more interested in others. She will have less time and inclination v for self-pity and fear about the future. As she builds up contacts, it is quite likely that marriage pos sibilities will turn up. We think Mary greatly ex aggerates "the odds" against her. Despite statistics, it is a fact that warm, pleasant, in teresting women of any age usually manage to awaken a certain amount of masculine interest and get marriage op portunities if they really want them. Board of Health has noted ! 23 new cases of infectious he patitis in Oregon last week, bringing the yearly total to 839 or more than twice the number reported for the same period last year. , High area last week was the city of Portland with five cases for a total of 65 this year. Douglas county, center of this year's hepatitis out break, reported four new cases for a total of 170. The board said 1959 is al ready the fourth worst year for infectious hepatitis, being topped only by the 1953 to 1955 period. Flu cases last week mount ed to 672. a sharp increase over the 496 cases of the pre-1 vious week. Fred Meyer Enters Business in Seattle Portland Fred Meyer, Inc., has announced plans to merge with four major drug stores in Seattle. The four stores will become a subsidiary of the Meyer chain, effective immediately. The stores, owned by the Markettime Corp., are Em pire Way, Lake City, Holman Road and Broadway Market. All are comparatively new, and one was just recently opened, according to the an nouncement.
