Sill, Okla. - (UPB - The Army, bless it, is earnestly trying to save the taxpayers' money in training men to fire missiles. In the past, trainees learned to fire their weapons by going to a range and blasting at a target. Not so anymore - not with a single Redstone missile carrying a price tag in the neighborhood of 5300,000. Using up these missiles for multi-firing training purposes would make a considerable dent in any pocketbook, even the government's, to say no thing of the danger involved . in allowing trainees to fire the giant weapon across vast areas. So the Army is using a device at its Artillery and Missile Center here which does everything that a real Redstone does, except blast off. Used Repeatedly The "stand - in" missile, which costs an estimated S30, 000, can be used repeatedly for training shots. It reacts to checkouts and firing opera tions exactly as a "live" mis sile would, even through flight, which the electrical devices can simulate. Capt. John B. Riordan, chief of the Redstone Instructional Branch, pointed out that the potential danger of allowing trainees to fire a "live" mis sile, plus the damage caused by continued tinkering with the Redstone, is eliminated by the trainer. "Allow I n g inexperienced trainees to handle a tactical missile would not only short en the life span of the mis sile," he said, "it would also increase the chances for a mal function in firing. "Reliability is the problem with missiles. It takes only one malfunction among the missile's millions of parts to ruin a firing mission." 'Brains' in Truck The "brains" of the training missile are in a truck, called the "analyzer van," loaded with electronic computers and reactors. These devices trig ger responses in the trainer missile to checkout and firing procedures issued from the missile's fire control unit. These responses in the train er missile can be checked for accuracy throughout the fir ing and launching procedures, allowing instructors to make notes of all errors and devi ations in the correct firing procedure. After thorough training to correct these miscalculations, officials of the school believe that graduates are fully ready to handle a "live" Redstone. "We figure the Redstone Trainer costs the Army a frac tion of what a tactical Red stone costs," says Lt. Col G. H. Wenzel. "Considering the use we get out of the trainer, that represents a considerable saving to the taxpayer." Dr. Currier Mc Ewen of New York Universi ty Medical college told the American Rheumatism asso ciation meeting here, indi cates that this belief is prob ably not true. Arthritis of the peripheral joints was found in 33 of the patients. But, in contrast to rheumatoid arthritis, this ' arthritis usually was temp orary rather than chronic. Unlike rheumatoid arthritis which appears symmetrically (that is, in both knees, elbows or ankles), the peripheral arthritis appeared in just single joints in most cases. Dr. McEwen also pointed out that blood tests for rheu matoid factor, a mysterious substance found in the serum of rheumatoid arthritis, proved negative in these pa tients.
