George Meany on Reds7 Black List, as Labor Leader Who Exposed Union Plotting MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. C w...,u rio, u loco v By LYLE C. WILSON Washington-JITD - The Com munist newspaper "Trud" was gunnin? against a long time enemy just now when it let AFL-CIO Presid ent George Meany have it from both barrels. lrud was abusing Mea ny on charges that he was Vylt C. wukm. guilty of ut tering anti-Soviet slanders. Anything Meany says about the Soviet Union is most like ly to be anti but NOT neces sarily slanderous. Meany was among the foremost of U. S. labor leaders who rejected at all times the idea that Com munism is anything other . than a mortal danger to the United States. The showdown in U.S. la bor came toward the end of World War II when the Rus sian Communists set a bear trap for organized labor in the free world. The catch was impressive in Western Europe and inthe Western Hemi sphere. The catch included the American CIO, but not the AFL. The organized labor of Great Britain, France and many other countries was caught in whole or in part. Propaganda Instrument The bait was a new organ ization, the World Federation of Trade Unions, which was invented, owned and control led by the Communist Party. The purpose of the WFTU was to align organized labor everywhere behind Commu nist Party policies. In the United States, the CIO was to be the instrument for putting pressure on Congress and the public to adopt the party line These purposes were so re markably obvious from the outset that it is difficult to understand how powerful non- Communist elements of the CIO were enticed. The late Sidney Hillman gaily led the CIO into this Communist trap and elected a vice president of the new order. The CIO, of course, was heavily infiltrated in 1945 by known and unknown Com munists." Morevover, the CIO was infested by fellow travel lers who followed the Com munist Party line. The House Committee on Un-American Activities listed 13 CIO un ion leaders as Communists in 1948 and 20 unions affiliated with the CIO as having been then or previously under Communist control. Meany Kepi AFL Out When the CIO blundered into the WFTU it submitted itself, in fact, to the Com munists for abuse as a vast organ of. Communist propa ganda in the United States. George Meany had a big hand in keeping the AFL out of this vast and dangerous en tanglement and the newspa per Trad has been picking on him ever since. Meany was AFL secretary. Matthew Woll, vice presi dent of AFL, said in June, 1957: "The question of CIO in ternational labor relations is in the hands of pro-Communists." It was estimated that WFTU had 70,000,000 members, a powerhouse of Communist propaganda. Meany, Woll, the AFL and some others con stantly exposed WFTU objec tives. Otherwise this vast propaganda machine might still be operating effectively against the United States to day. These criticisms and the fact that the Reds overplayed their hand in pressuring the CIO combined to force some thing to give. The CIO and other free world unions walked out of WFTU in 1949 and, in time, the CIO pretty well cleaned its own house of Reds. Little Quarrels That Threaten Peace Found Along Ike's Trip 4lul Newsom By PHIL NEWSOM UPI Foreign Cdiior President Eisenhower's 11 nation tour is giving him a close up view of the little quarrels that stand in the way of the of th big peace. They are the quarrels among neigh boring na tions, small in comparison to the global struggle between Democratic and communistic ideologies, but looming so large in the eyes of the participants they may be blind to all else. In some cases communism has helped to keep the fer ment going but mostly they are strictly local. As the President travelled along the perimeter of the Iron Curtain from Turkey to India and then doubled back for his Western summit meet ing in Paris, here are some he has encountered: Turkey: Within the last year, Turkey has been at the brink of war with the United Arab Republic, has normally strained relations with Rus sia and, despite settlement of the Cyprus question and the fact that both are NATO na tions, is only friendly on the surface toward Greece. The two are ancient enemies and seem unlikely to change. Pakistan-India: The two are bitterly at odds over Kash mir, claimed by both and now split along an uneasy cease fire line. Earlier plans to let Kashmir decide for itself in a plebiscite have gone by the boards and no settlement is in sight. The two also have quarreled over water rights. Afghanistan: Relations with Pakistan are normal on the surface but irritated by Af ghanistan claims to a portion of Pakistan's northwest terri tory and by Afghan support for an independent Pathan state which also would slice off some Pakistan territory. Iran: Involved in a border dispute with neighboring Iraq and a dispute over use of inland waters which both use to get their oil to the Persian Gulf, Iran also is suspicious of both UA..R. and Russian in fluence among Kurdish tribes men who spread along the borders from Iraq, through Syria, Iran and into Turkey. Kurdish demands for an in dependent state have been supported by Russia. Greece: Still suspicious of Turkey. Tunisia: Maintains close ties with France but at odds with the French over Tunis ian support of the Algerian rebels. French warplanes have Dombea Tunisian sou on charges that Tunisia provides a sanctuary for hit-run at tacks on French troops in Al geria. Morocco: Also at odds with France over the Algerian is sue and with Spain over Spanish-held territory inside Moroccan boundaries. U. S. air bases in Morocco, which cost millions to build, will be abandoned at Morocco's re quest. Spain: Last of the Fascist dictatorships and outside the Western family of nations for most of the years since World War II. Relations with the U. S. good, improving with France and West Germany, chilly, in most other places. France-England parmany: Currently Eisenhower's big gest problem. France annoyed with the United States. Brit ain annoyed with France, and West Germany suspicious of Britain. Our President spoke to the Indian parliament. He re minded its members that WEAKNESS IN ARMS IN VITES AGGRESSION. (India is notably weak in military power.) He told the members of India's parliament that the United States is committed to a search for genuine disarm ament BUT IS MAINTAIN IN G STRONG FORCES AGAINST AGGRESSION. In his speech he made it clear that if India is to STAY FREE India must keep itself militarily strong. But there WAS NOT A SOUND when the President spoke of the fruits of weak ness. Nor was there any audi ble reaction when the Presi dent made clear American de termination to provide ade quate forces to RESIST AG GRESSION, though it seemed plain he was referring to the threat to India from Red China. There were 17 inter ruptions for applause, but some were mere ripples. At the end of his talk, the ap plause and desk thumping lasted only 20 seconds." WHY THE difference? Well, on the street, on his way from the airport, Ike was receiving the plaudits of the people, who were LOOK ING FOR A .MIRACLE. In the parliament, he was talk ing to responsible officials who will have to DO SOME THING ABOUT IT. The man on the street can cheer his head off for the visiting Pres ident of the United States, but RESPONSIBILITY rests on the shoulders of the mem bers of the parliament. The man in the street doesn't personally have to do anything about it. He doesn't have to make decisions and then stand by them. The members of the parliament do. That makes a lot of' difference. TN APPRAISING the situa- tion, we must remember that present-day India is built around Gandhi's doctrine of passive resistance. This doc trine was all well enough when it was directed against the British who were already shaken by the knowledge that much of what had been in the past was BAD, and must be changed if Britain was to stay in India. resistance is non sense of the first water when directed against Red China and communism in general. The danger that India is fac ing can't be warded off by passive resistance.
