Kentucky With 77 - By FRED DOWN United Press International Don't count those Kentucky Wildcats out of. the national basketball picture! They've suffered two early season defeats but Coach Adolph Rupp's boys bounced back with a 77-72 overtime victory over Kansas Monday night and now go on to the wee k-end Kentucky Invita tional tournament in which third-ranked . West Virginia, fifth-ranked North Carolina and sixth-ranked St. Louis also are entered. A victory in that tourna ment plus a triumph over sec ond-ranked Ohio State, Dec 28, and the Wildcats would be right back among the coun try's top 10 teams where they Started the season with high hopes that this might prove to, be one of Rupp's greatest teams. Sweet Victory For Hupp Kentucky's third victory in five games was especially sweet for Rupp because it marked the 58-year old coach's first return to the Lawrence, Kans., campus since he won a letter on the 1923 national championship team there. Then free throws by Don Mills and Sid Cohen, sandwiched between a tip-in and recovery by 6-9 center Ned Jennings clinched the victory. Jennings was high scorer for Kentucky with 27 points but game honors went to Kan sas soph Wayne Hightower who had 33 points. It was the second loss in five games for ninth-ranked Kansas. The coaches based their voting on games played through Saturdayi' Dec. 12. California was fourth, North Carolina fifth and St Tenuis sixth. Utah was seventh, Bradley eighth, Kansas ninth nnH Southern California 10th. Bradley and Southern Cali fornia were the newcomers in the top 10, replacing Ken tucky and Indiana. He easily shook off the ring rust of nearly 21 months as he knocked out Bob Young of Providence, R.I., at 1:18 of the second round. This is a tune up fight for Sugar Ray before meeting Paul Pender at the Boston Garden Jan. 22. (UPI Telephoto) Sugar Ray Slugs Out Victory Boston - OIPD - The moral: Don't shake up the Sugar Man. Bob Young found that out Monday night as he served as Sugar Ray Robinson's target in the five-time middleweight champion's return to the ring battles after a 21-month lay off. Robinson, only a few months less than 40, was tun ing up for a so-called title bout Jan. 22 with Paul Pend er of Brookline. "I just goofed," said Young, who hails from Providence, R.I. and holds the New Eng land light heavyweight title, Young meant the instance in the first round of the sched uled 10-rounder at the Gar den, when he saw an opening, landed a good left hook and then was too surprised to fol low it up. Robinson admitted the punch hurt him "Yes, he hurt me in the first round," he 6aid. "I had wanted to go five rounds af ter such a long period of in activity. But I saw he was sharp and clever and I knew it was either him or me." Robinson, who admits to 38 though listed in the record book as 40 next May, pro ceeded to floor the 27-year- old Young three times in the second round before ending it with a kayo at 1:18. "I knew I couldn't gamble after that first round," he said. "He was very clever." Robinson, who weighed 161 to Young's le?1, said he was "right" when he first climbed into the ring. "But I have a lot of ham in me and I loosen ed right up as soon as I saw the crowd of 6,633." Grants Pass was fourth in state last year. This season the Cavemen have, dropped their only match, 22 to 17 to Roseburg. Medford tied Cra ter 20 to 20. Five lettermen are among those slated to appear in counting matches for the Med ford Black Tornado. They are Dennis Pugmire, 114 pounds; Wayne Fields, 135; Ray Smith, 140; Bill Charley, 156; and Lee Cook, 167. Others slated to meet Cave men varsity performers are Jim Spitz, 97; Clay Varney, 105; George Chambers, 121; Sonny Leffler, 129; Larry Gunn, 147; Bob Rix, or Ron Gandee, 177; Chuck Shaw, 190, and Stan Hobbs, unlim ited. League figures revealed that the 34-year-old Jones compiled a league-leading 2.82 earned run average to beat out teammate Stu Miller and Bob Buhl of the Milwau kee Braves in a close three cornered race. Miller finished with a 2.84 average and Buhl had a 2.86 mark. It was by far the most bril liant year of Jones' career. He had a 21-15 wOn-lost record, struck out 209 batters in 271 innings, appeared in 50 games, pitched four shutouts, had a nine-inning one-hitter and a seven-inning no-hitter and pitched 16 complete games. Miller, appearing in 59 games and 168 innings, had a 8-7 record while Buhl, who worked in 31 games and 198 innings, had a 15-9 mark. Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette of. the Milwaukee Braves were the other 20 game winners each finishing with a 21-15 record that matched Jones' figure. Spahn, who has won 20 games a rec ord 10 times for a N.L. left hander, was fourth in earned run average with 2.96 but Burdette had a 4.07 ERA that placed him way up the list in that department. Burdette gave up the most hits, 3 12, and the most home runs, 38. Elroy Face, the brilliant little relief pitcher of the Pittsburgh Pirates, won 17 Straight games and set a new major league mark with an 18-1 season record that gave him a .947 percentage. Face, in 57 games and 91 innings, had a 2.71 earned run aver age but did not Qualify for the "lead" in that department because he did not appear in 154 innings. Wildcats Nip St. Martins' McMinnville - (UPD - Guard Jackie Riley broke Linfield's all - time basketball scoring record Monday night as the Wildcats walloped St. Mar tin's 104-63. : Riley scored 16 points to raise his career total to 1,624, passing the previous mark of 1,617 held by Bill Machamer.
