Valley Boat Reviewed at Roundtable Quality not quantity is the basis on which boats are built and sold at the Tru-V Boat WorRs, just outside of Med ford, according to owner Jim Allen. Allen spoke at Jackson County Chamber of Com merce roundtable luncheon at the Jackson hotel Monday. He was invited to tell of his com pany's operations and any plans he might have for the future. He said the company, which he runs with his son . and one other employee, is a relatively new one, having started in 1957. It has produc ed and sold only a few boats up until now, according to Al len. He plans to make and sell 40 boats next year, and is em barking on a program of slow expansion, he told the round table. Original Idea The Tru-V Boat Works, lo cated about 12 miles north of Medford on Modoc rd., was started on an original idea of Allen's, the V-shaped hull. This V-shaped hull, Allen said, allows the boat to move through the water with a min imum of ease without un necessary bouncing or splash ing. He said he first thought of the idea back in 1929 but never gave serious thought t developing it until several years ago. He and his son first started making boats with ' plywood, Allen said, but switched to fiber-glass construction last year when they discovered people preferred that mater ial. He will try to market his boats in this area and perhaps as far away as Portland, he added. . The company is now mak ing two basic models, a 12 foot and a 15-foot boat. They plan to market an 18 foot boat in 1961 and a 22-foot boat in 1962. They now have a working model of the 18-foot boat, he said, and are pleased with its performance. 15 Variations Out of tlje two models he is n o w producing 15 varia tions can be made, he said, which is one advantage his company has over larger man ufacturers. They produce in such large quantities that they can not allow for many variations, he pointed out. His company could not hope to compete with the large manufacturers by producing average quality boats in quan tity, so they decided to man ufacture a boat with good workmanship but in fewer numbers. They are also making a do-it-yourself boat. The consumer buys the hull and other com plicated parts pre-made, and then completes the job them selves. Sells Directly His "company sells the boats directly to the consumer with out going through the middle man. He said they first sold through dealers at a medium price range, but ' found that the dealers cut left them with too little profit to operate. Large Majority of U.S. Families To Practice Some Form of Birth Editor'! note: This is the second of three background dispatches on the current controversy over birth control. It reports on the actual practices of American families, and on legal restrictions. By LOUIS CASSELS Washington -IJ?&- A large majority of American fami lies practice some form of birth control. That fact has long been ob vious from the U.S. birth rate, which - consistently remains far below the biological maxi mum. It has been confirmed by study conducted jointly by the University of Michigan re search center and the Scnpps foundation for population re search. The researchers interview ed 2,713 white married wo men between the ages of 18 and 39. Except for the fact that no Negroes were includ ed, the women interviewed were a scientifically-selected sample of the nation's popula tion, with all religious groups and economic brackets in cluded in the right propor tions. The findings, recently pub lished, show that. 62 per cent of the women expressed "un qualified approval" of birth control, and an additional 12 per cent approved with some qualifications. Includes All Faiths The initial question was so worded that all forms of birth control including the "rhythm method" approved by the Catholic Church-were included. The researchers then asked about the methods of birth control used. They found that standard contraceptive .devices were used, occasionally or exclu sively, by 89 per cent of the Protestants and 96 per cent of the Jews who practice birth control. . While the rhythm method was most widely used among Catholic wives, the research team said that a "very signif icant" percentage of Catholics acknowledged regular or occa sional use of contraceptives. The number who admitted us buy Penney's ing methods condemned by their church constituted 30 per cent of all Catholic wives covered by the survey, and more than 50 per cent of the Catholic wives who had said they practiced some form of birth control. Federal Law . Although few Americans re alize it, there is a federal law, still on the books, which makes it a crime to import mail or transport in inter state commerce, "any article for the prevention of concep tion." This law is called the Corn stock Act in honor of Vice Crusader Anthony Comstock, who pushed it through Con gress in 1873. Many states adopted "little Comstock acts" during the same period, banning the manufacture or sale of contraceptives or the dispensing of birth control advice. Repeal All But Two Enforcement of the fedeAl law has been invalidated by a famous court decision rend ered by Judge Learned Hand in 1936. All but two of the state laws have been repealed. "I can find nothing in the Bible which would forbid birth control," he said Mon day. . There were 9,000 draftees request ed for this month and 7,000 for January.
