The woman president, a native of Evanslon. 111., is undoubtedly one of the nation's youngest female executives. - ., . .(UPI Telephoto) undoubtedly prettiest woman executives. "The basic talent to begin with: then the basic training and finally, caring enough about the job to work hard I honestly believe these are the qualities," said Geraldine Stutz. Miss Stutz, 35, is president of Henri Bendel, a landmark on New York's fashionable 57th street. For two years she has occupied the specialty store's executive suite' - in celadon green with works of art from her personal collec tion decorating its walls. We checked in to see how Miss Stutz is doing in a busi ness highly competitive in any city, and in a position which most career women of any age would give their eye teeth to have. The answer is quite well. And bossing 200 employees -many of whom have been with the store 25 to 50 years -apparently hasn't given her a swollen head. Relaxed and Friendly ' "So what's to be impressed about?" said Gerry Stutz. The woman president is dis armingly unlike many execu tive types this reporter has in terviewed. No chain of secre taries to break through; just one assistant, a pretty blonde. No constant telephone inter ruptions. And no hard-hitting, brusque manner. Instead, you meet a relax ed, friendly woman who looks about 25; who has dark brown hair worn in a short bob, dark eyes ,and the figure of a mo del five feet, six-inches and around 110 pounds; a woman president who sits at her desk eating a doughnut and drink ing tea from a paper cup. .- "I'm usually here by nine each morning," she said. "I aon i worK late many eve nings ... I like to crowd in a lot of theater. But it seems like I haven't h?d a Saturday off since I took this job." Miss-Stutz, a native of Ev anston, 111., and a daughter of a contractor, wanted to be an actress. She studied at Munde- lein college, which has turned out several successful actress es, but said that "somewhere along the line I . realized I just didn't have it. So I switched my major to journal ism." - ; - She arrived on the New York scene in 1947 and got her first job as shoe editor of Glamour magazine. "I didn't know much about shoes," she said, "but the women at the top had tremendous confi dence in me." - : Wailing for Right Man She polished her knowledge by hoofing it regularly to Eu rope to cover the fashion col lections. Genesco's head, Maxey Jar man, was so impressed by her performance with the shoe business that six months after he acquired Bendel, he gave her the job of putting the store in the black. Miss Stutz said she owns a chunk of Genesco stock, and some guesses have put her earnings as high as S40.000 a year. But she refused to talk salary. The store presiC.it doubted if her youth and good looks had been either an asset or handicap in the job. "The way you look and the age you are don't matter in business, long range," she said. "It is how well you Jo the job. "But one thing, I am not a career woman . in the tradi tional sense . . . not like one of those Roz Russell heroines in the movies. I love men, women, children and dogs and want to get married when I meet the right man! "This is a pleasant way of making a living. It is not1 a way of life." Milnes Selected io Play in Honor Band Greg Milnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Milnes, 15 North Groveland ave., Medford, has been selected to represent Willamette university in the Western and Northwestern In tercollegiate Honor band, the college has announced. The band is made up of top players in colleges and univer sities in the western states. It will play for the College Band Directors National asso ciation meeting at the Univer sity of California in Berkeley, Calif., this week. Milnes, who was a member of the Medford High school band, is a junior pre-law stu dent majoring in economics at Willamette. They Crunch .
