Hill today announced that South ern Pacific company has promised extra box cars to re lieve a spot car shortage in southern Oregon. Kefauver Wants Break for Public On Drug Costs Washington (UPD Senate investigators charged today that the Veterans Administra tion paid $136,000 for some "bonder drug" tablets which could have been bought un der competitive bidding for about $38,000. The Senate anti-trust sub committee said the VA ne gotiated the purchase in Feb ruary; 1958, from Merck and Co., a big pharmaceutical com pany, at the rate of $136 for 1,000-tablet bottles. According to. the subcora .mittee, the VA, a month later, bought the same amount on a low bid basis for $38.50 a bottle. As a bidder, Merck dropped its price from $136 to $95 but still was too high, the subcommittee said. It later came down to $65. At this time, investigators said, Merck was selling the drug prednisone, used in ar thritis treatment, to druggists for $170. The price to con sumers was $283. John T. Connor, president of the company, was asked how Merck could offer the drug to the VA for $65 and still defend its $170 price to druggists as reasonable. Connor replied that compe titive conditions for govern ment business were a good deal different from -those in the retail pharmacy trade. For instance, he said, the gov ernment buys in large quan- Later, the subcommittee . men" - the drug industry's facilities. , said that in his opinion this I "Why can't you give the He said Connor's arguments planned to inquire into the version of the traveling sales But subcommittee Chair- did not explain such a wide public a little break?" he ask- were "not very persuasive." extent that the use of "detail man - influenced drug salts.
