Hoffbuhr Recognized By Pirates Phoenix. Lineman Jack Hoffbuhr was recognized the outstanding Phoenix high football player of the year at the annual dinner for the squad last night. Hoffbuhr was voted by his teammates as most , inspira tional player, the most valu able senior, the best down- field blocker and the best tackier. Othar Richey, end, and Gerald Sloper, back, were named co-captains for the 1960 season. Ragsdale Speaks . .. . Lee Ragsdale, supervisor of health and physical education for the Medford school sys tem, was the main speaker. E. M. Skipworth, vice-prm-cialp of Phoenix high, was master of ceremonies ' and Merle Simmons represented the Phoenix school board of which he is chairman. Hoop Start Scheduled By Phoenix Phoenix - Phoenix high's Pirates cap two weeks of in tensive drilling Friday and Saturday with their initial basketball competition of the season. They open at home on Fri day against seemingly strong Pleasant Hill. Saturday activ ity takes the Pirates to Brook ings. There are six lettermen on the Phoenix squad. They are Ron Baker, Mike Comstock, Mike Reese, Gerald Sloper, Othar Richey and Jim Floyd. Others on the 11-man var sity are Gary" Chriss, Bob Craig, Sam Walls, Raymond Thompson and Rickey Richey. Chriss and Thompson are up from the junior varsity. Craig is a transfer from Fall River, Calif., and Walls come from a school in the Los Angeles area. Richey is a freshman. Sloper is tall man on the club at 6-2, Thompson is 6-1 V and Baker 6 ' feet. Othar Richey is a shade under six feet. The possible starting unit for coach Jack Woodward's team is Baker, Sloper, Cons bruck, Floyd and Reese. Oth ar Richey appeared a likely starter but has been sick and is not to return to the squad until Monday. Woodward said Craig, Chriss - and Rickey Richey probably will be a lot of action. About 30 boys and girls will make the trip from here. This meet is the kick-off for the Columbia Basin Swim league, of which Medford is a member. Twelve teams will take part. First home meet for the Medford team will be on Feb. 9, when the Tillamook YMCA team visits. Linda Hess, Medford, will defend her league record for the 100 yards freestyle this week. Copeland 414) Raiders Go To Chico For Tiffs Ashland - Southern Oregon college ventures south for a two-game series with the Chi co State Wildcats Friday and Saturday nights. Red Raider coach Ted Schopf hopes to take his com plete squad of 12 ballplayers. Schopf feels the whole team earned the trip after last week end's comeback victory over Humboldt State. Reserve Dick Puhl and Brad Flanary potted six key points in the waning minutes. Three times last year the Raiders and the Wildcats met. The two teams split two games at the opening of the season on the Raider -hardwood. SOC took one 70-63 and the Wild cats took the other 58-55. The third meeting was in the Far Western conference tourna ment at Humboldt. The Raid ers took the advantage and romped to a 73-57 win. Set shot Gordy Carrigan leads the Raider scoring now with 32 points in two games. Forward John Payne is sec ond to Carrigan with a 12 av erage en 24 points. The 6-5 forward has grabbed off 31 rebounds. Don Vannice will be the other forward this week against the 'Cats. He has a 5-point average and 7 rebound record. Starting at center for the Raiders will be Glen Peter son, a 6-5 post player who is tied with Payne for the re bound lead. Peterson aver aged 7 points in the Hum boldt series. Teaming with Carrigan at guard is Dennis Conner. Con-, ner, at 5-11, is making his first bid into basketball since com ing to Southern Oregon. He scored eight points in his first two games but six of them came in the second battle which helped the Raiders win 45-43. For reserve the Raiders will have guards Dick Lillebo, Puhl, and Flanary. Flanary at 5-8 is the shortest member of the Raider varsity and the only freshman. Schopf con siders him- one of - the top prospects n SOC history. Letterman Dick Smith plays the center spot on the second unit with forwards Tom Ber net and Dave Gardner or Bud Kastner. All three shoot the jump shot along with Smith but Gardner can hit the long set shot and rebound consist ently. . Ramsey, a former Kentucky star, scored 29 points Wed nesday night as Boston staged a second-half drive to beat the Warriors, 137-116, and even their season series at two-all.
