I Edith Green (D-Ore.), Chair man of the Oregon Kennedy for President Committee, now predicts that the Oregon pri mary could go one of two .ways. "It could be a contest be tween Morse and Neuberger; jor the Oregon people could decide they wanted their -votes to really count. If the "latter is the case, I don't have any doubt that Kennedy will win." i She said that the informal "polls taken in Oregon six -weeks ago showed Sen. John :F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) to be ithe leading contender among -the Democrats. Mrs. Green said she was told before she Zleft Oregon that a group defi--nitely plans to put Sen. Rich ard L. Neuberger on the bal jrlot by petition. Another group thas already announced that it twill file a petition on behalf -of Sen. Wayne Morse. ; Crystal Ball Refused Mrs. Green refused to use a -crystal ball when asked who she thought would win in a 'contest between Senators ;Morse and Neuberger. PanHitod Faana Ho Tea VJEM'S r Tuesday, Dee. 8, 1959 had hurt Kennedy or cut into his chances of winning the primary election, Mrs. Green replied, "The criticism has hurt Kennedy, but should not seriously affect his chances." She noted that prominent labor leaders, such as Walter Reuther and George Meany have made statements prais ing Kennedy. Another controversy which raged around Kennedy re cently, the potentially explos ive birth control statement of the Catholic Bishops of the United States, has caused speculation as to how Ken nedy's chances were affected by the public debate. Mrs. Green declined to assess the effect on public opinion in Oregon. Supporters Hopeful But the Washington Post re ported that local Kennedy people have never talked more hopefully than they are talking today. Far from "knocking him out of the race," Kennedy lieutenants said the religious question was bound to arise in one form or another, sooner or later. They said they were glad it arose early, so that it can be thoroughly debated. Kennedy has said that if he were President, he would de cide on his own judgment what would be in the interest of the United States if legisla tion tending to promote birth control in countries receiving American aid ever came be fore him. If such legislation became law, he said he would uphold it. Mrs. Green believes the pri maries are valuable in Ore gon, as long as there is a real choice between serious con tenders. She feels that if a candidate files an affidavit disavowing his candidacy, it is wrong to force him to run because of a petition in his behalf. May Bring Change "If this primary does noth ing else, it may bring about a change in the Oregon law," she said. "We should elimi nate the petition that enables a man to be put on the ballot against his will.". Mrs. Green agrees with Adlai Stevenson, who has said "no" to the primary, and has indicated he will file an affidavit to have his name re moved from the ballot. She feels, with Stevenson, that it would be a mistake .for him to get involved in the pri maries. She thought the 1956 primaries were anything but a contest, and that they didn't add to Stevenson's stature. She added that he isn't a per son who enjoys a primary campaign anyway. By BERNARD BRENNER Washington -(UPD- Farmers who produce fruits and vege tables are wrestling with the problem of building their bargaining power to compete on equal terms in the nation's fast-changing food economy. "It's the biggest challenge fruit and vegetable growers have to face over the next sev eral years," said one long-time observer of the industry's problems here. "Growers will have to adjust to a decided change in the market and in marketing practices." One step toward meeting the challenge was taken re cently when the American Farm Bureau Federation an nounced plans for setting up a national farm commodity marketing and bargaining sub sidiary. Will Help Coordination Farm Bureau officials said the new organization will help state and area groups coordi nate their efforts to "find the appropriate price for a com modity, based on supply and demand conditions." The new group will not do any direct bargaining itself on the na tional level. First activity for the new organization, Farm Bureau officials said, will be in the field of processed fruits and vegetables. Farmers who produce these crops face particularly diffi cult problems because they are selling into markets in creasingly controlled by re tailers. Growers Bargain "Growers have combined to bargain with processors in the past and there may be more of this," one observer said. "But the price pressure grow ers get from processors is just being passed back from the re tail buyers. The next step may be growers, and processors combining to bargain with the buyers." The ereater strength of large national and regional food chains has been getting more and more attention in the capital. Officials of the Agriculture Department and the Federal Trade Commission have been, studying food chain mergers and the growing buy ing power of the giant surviv ors in the chain field. On Capitol Hill, a House subcommittee headed by Rep. James Roosevelt (D-Calif.) is Nixon Urged To Act On Steel Dispute New York - (CPD - Gov. Nel sonson A. Rockefeller chal lenged Vice President Rich ard M. Nixon Sunday to use the prestige of his office in an effort to settle the steel strike. Rockefeller, a possible rival of Nixon for the Republican presidential nomination, no ted that President Eisenhower before leaving on his 11-na-tion tour called for intensified efforts to settle the strike. "I hope that the vice presi dent in his position of high prestige as vice president, will be' able to contribute a solu tion to this problem," the New York governor said. MISSILE AIRLIFT San Diego, Calif. (UPD - The Air Force said today it has successfully completed the first transcontihental ballistic missile from here to Cape Canaveral, Fla. The trip to the Florida testing grounds took seven hours and five minutes in an Air Force C133B Cargomaster plane. Central "suspected" that Red China, using funds realized by sale in France of agricultural products, purchased the cars and shipped them to San Francisco in an effort to ac quire American funds. Roose velt's subcommittee subpoe naed the records of a group of major West Coast food chains in preparation for hearings into charges that the chains had forced canners to drop prices to artificially low levels. Concentration of Power "We are seeing a concentra tion of purchasing power," one veteran marketing spe cialist said. "This means there are more suppliers for fewer and fewer buyers, and this puts the farmers who are sell ers in a .weaker bargaining position. "If we're going to maintain a free market in the food field the bargaining forces must be approximately equal. Today when the supply of any fruit or vegetable product get a little on the 'long' side, you begin to feel the buyer's pow er. Even when the supply is balanced now, the situation can be turned to the advan tage of the buyer." Farmers wh6 produce for canning and freezing plants have been facing another problem in recent year the need to concentrate on tailor ing their crops to meet buyer specifications. Important in Future This will become more im portant in the future, an Ag riculture Department econo mist said, because of the trend toward greater use of pro cessed foods. Prices for growers are hard to predict because they de pend so heavily on supply, the economist said. But in fruit crops, production is high "and I don't see any up trend in prices," he said. Per. capita fruit consump tion in the U. S. has been hov ering around 200 pounds a vear since 1950 and most ex perts believe it will stay close to that level in the near fu ture. With production grow ing in recent years, prices have been coming down to the point where small-acreage Droducers are feeling a squeeze. "If anybody feels we can get back to the fruit prices of the last four or five years he's not being realistic," is the warning from one Agriculture Department expert. (Next: Poultry.) 7i Back Stairs: By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI While House Reporter Karachi, Pakistan (UPD-Back. stairs at the traveling White House: The snow gets deeper in Afghanistan, next stop on President Eisenhower's tour of the Middle East and Asia, but the White House is busy devising several alternatives if the weather is too bad to land at Kabul tomorrow. If there is a possibility of the weather improving as the day goes on, Eisenhower might fly first to Agra, India, visit the Taj Mahal, then dou able back to Afghanistan dur ing the afternoon before go ing on to New Delhi. Then again, if the weather is poor, he might delay Af ghanistan and take another look at the situation when he leaves India next week. But so intent is the White House on getting into Kabul if possible that they now plan to send a helicopter up over the Kabul Airport early Wed nesday morning and have the chopper radio to the Presi dent's plane precisely what the weather conditions are at the moment. Some of the President's closer associates -were talking at the start of this trip about Eisenhower's tastes in food. He tends to be somewhat of a food faddist and becomes so enthusiastic at times that he virtually forces those near him to share his latest food discovery. One man said, "you should have lived through his yogurt period. It was simply awful. He had everybody eating the stuff. He wouldn't settle for plain yogurt but went to strawberry yogurt and final ly to some plum and yogurt concoction." The man reported thank fully that the yogurt period was relatively brief. The Quirinal Palace where Eisenhower lived while he was in Rome is large enough to hold four or five buildings Sunday Accident Hospitalizes Man William Ray Andrews, 49, of 35 Vancouver ave., Med ford, is in the Grants Pass hospital today with head cuts following an accident on High way 99 by Birdseye creek, state police said today. The accident occurred early Sunday morning when a car driven by Andrews rounded a slight left turn and angled off onto a shoulder and into a roadside ditch. The car hit a telephone pole and guy-line and turned over several times, officers said. The car was re ported damaged beyond re pair. More m LEIGH MOTORS Afghanistan the size of the White House. It turned out that a nearby brewery had the only demineralized water in many miles and the brewers were happy to make several bar rels available. The Eisenhower baggage includes a large oval leather box for transporting his black homburg which he wears with his dinner jacket at night. One good thing has come out of this trip, Eisenhower will be home, in Washington, for Christmas Day. His weary travel crew will get at least that much time with their families, but the President is making no promises for the rest of Christmas week. Many people speculated on it at the time, but Eisenhow er's real reason for being so emphatic last week about the governments staying out of the birth control situation in volved more than the issue of birth control itself.
