Delzell, chairman of the board of directors of Portland General Electric Company, has been elected president of the Portland Chamber of Commerce. by QUACK MACHINES In a recent number of the Journal of the American Med ical Association there is an in teresting arti cle written by my friend Mr. Oliver Field, who is the country's expert on quacks. He has a list of them, with much infor mation on the Dr. Alvarez life history of each one. I read that a former engineer is now putting out what appears to be a highly scientific machine which costs from $250 to S350. It is supposed to cure pretty near anything. I imagine it is patterned somewhat on the machines that a certain Albert Abrams used to sell many years ago. He sold them main ly to none-too-bright bid phy sicians who had never been able to get a practice. He sold them, also, to men who called themselves doctors and who practiced on the fringe of medicine. What happens now, with the new machines, is that the company that makes them places advertisements saying that sufferers from sinus trou bles, or arthritis, or high blood pressure, or hardening of the arteries, should send nine cents for a booklet which will tell them much good news. When the sucker gets the booklet, he reads that a certain so-called doctor in his School Vacations In County Set Christmas vacation periods for schools in Jackson county, as announced by district sup erintendents, were reported today by the county superin tendent's office. Ashland and Prospect schools will close Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 22. All others will close Wed nesday afternoon, Dec. 23, in cluding Phoenix and Talent, Central Point, Gold Hill, Sams Valley, Eagle Point, Elk-Trail, Shady Cove, Rogue River, Applegate, Evans Valley, Butte Falls, Pinehurst and all Medford schools, including Lone Pine, Howard, Griffin Creek, Jacksonville and Ruch. All schools will reopen Monday, Jan. 4.
