Main Sources of Air Pollution Discussed by Saarv 'Engineer Ted M. Gerow, Grants Pass, district sanitary engineer with the state sanitary author ity, told Medford Lions club members last week there are five main sources of air- pol lution. Gerow discussed the health and economic aspects of air pollution, pointing out one of the major environmental health problems today is air pollution. The five main sources of air pollution, he said, are domestic and muncipal, agri cultural, industrial, transpor tation, and natural. Gerow noted that the av erage man consumes about 16,000 quarts of air each day, a greater volume than the daily consumption of food, water and milk. He pointed out that the three basic in gestibles have for years been subject to purity control un der standards that have been established and -supervised by public health agencies. Health Aspects He reviewed ' some of the health aspects of smog condi tions, noting that it "is known that cancer producing agents exist in the community air supply our citizens breathe." He said that air pollution is not only man-made, but it also is nature-made. "The problem," he said, "is caused by air-borne allergens of vegetative and related ori gins. Seasonally, hay-fever attacks an estimated 1 to 2V2 million Americans. The cost to the nation in lost working time from these allergies , is believed to run into millions of dollars annually," he add ed. . Gerow also reviewed some of the more well-publicized smog tragedies, including Meuse valley, Belgium in 1930, Donora, Pa., in 1948, and London in 1952. London Smog The London smog caused 4,000 more deaths than nor mal, Meuse ' valley 60 deaths and the Donora smog resulted in 20 deaths. "It is important to note." the sanitary engineer said, "that air pollution punisies the senses and sensibilities of the so-called health citizen. Mew i'ork -(UPD- Kelvinator dealers, through the facilities oi ErHisco, Inc., a subsidiary of American Motors Coroj. have, set up a new credit pol icy under which a moratorium on installment payments is de clared during the holiday sea son in December and January. Discomfort, psychological re actions and outright fear -even terror - have been ex perienced by many people who are subjected to no more than average air pollution." The major offender in the domestic and muncipal causes of air pollution, Gerow said, appears to be sulphur diox ide and sulphur compounds discharged into the atmo sphere. Space heaters, open fires and refuse incinerators are the major source of this type pollution, he said. The agricultural industry contributes to air pollution through dust resulting from soil erosion, spraying with herbicidesi and insecticides and orchard heating prac tices. Industry Pollution The heaviest sources of pol lution among industries in this area, he said, results from burning refuse from the lum ber industry. The chemical in dustry is a growing source of pollution, although it is not now present in large num bers. Establishment of such in dustries in this area may be only a matter of time, Gerow said. The privately owned auto mobile contributes a major share to the transportation irw dustry"s pollution problem, which chiefly is from exhaust gases. The most significant emissions from automobile ex hausts are carbon monoxide, We Give J GREEN STAMPS ELLIS MARKET 820 Crater Lake Avenue 1 oxides of nitrogen and organ ic substances. This type of air pol lution is a major source of trouble- and illness to a large number of Oregonians who suffer from hayfever, asthma and other allergies.
