Wednesday, Dec 2, 1959 O&C Road Plan Eases Use Fee Portland - (UPD - Private companies which build road across Bureau of Land Man agement's western Oregon forest lands would be relieved of paying road use fees on these roads under proposed regulations announced by the Interior Department Tuesday. The proposed rules apply rights-of-way on the Oregon - and California railroad grant lands of western Oregon. Last year nearly one billion board feet of timber was harvested from these lands. Road Tise fees are a charge made 'to operators who haul over O&C roads. The fees are based on the amortization of , the cost of road construction plus an interest allowance. Fees vary widely depending on construction costs. The new regulations would remedy inequities which have resulted under the present rules, a spokesman said. Appeal Filed in Ruling for PT&T Salem - (UPD - An appeal has been filed with the State Su preme Court by Public Utility Commissioner Jonel C. Hill involving the Nov. 20 ruling by Marion County Circuit Judge Val D. SLoper favoring Pacific. Telephone and Tele graph Company. Howard Morgan, Hill's pre decessor, before leaving office issued an order granting Paci fic Telephone a hike of $759, 097 out of a requested $4,850, 000. The matter was imme diately taken to court by the telephone company. SLoper ruled that the PUC had improperly allocated plant ' and costs of operation between intra-state and inter state. . Existing intra - state toll rates between various distant points in Oregon are subject to greater toll charges than for calls for a like distance in Inter-state service. The PUC contends an increase in intra state message tolls would have resulted In a further disparity. Payroll Accounting At OTI Transferred Salem (UPD The "State Board of Education has ap proved a transfer of payroll accounting of Oregon Techni cal institute at Klamath Falls. The approval means that starting next Jan. 1 payroll accounting of OTI will be transferred from the State De partment of Finance and Ad ministration to the office of comptroller of the state sysr tem of higher education. OTI requested the transfer following an efficient study. The Board also approved new Joans and grants to OTI amounting to $14,440. Bees Eat Honey, Skunks Eat Bees Cheyenne, Wyo.-A bunch of skunks were eating the honey bees on Erwin Smith's farm near here. ' The skunks couldn't neach inside the beehives so they stood outside and scratched on the hive. The angered bees, with bits of honey on them, headed for the entrance and as they, swarmed out the skunks picked them off. "They chewed the bees until the honey was gone," Smith said, "then they'd spit them out. I've found pile after pile of thosevdead bees just outside fhe hives." CLUB NEWS SW Livestock, Poultry Club On Nov. 19, there was a meeting of the Southwest Livestock and Poultry, 4-H club. The meeting was held at the home of Mavis Strom. While waiting for all of the members to arrive, we had a contest to see who could, iden tify the most parts of the steer and chicken. The meeting was oDened at 7:30. We discussed the activities we wanted to have this year. We agreed to keep the same goals as last year. Each mem ber chose what month he or r she wished to hold a meeting. We are going to send mistle 4-H toe to a club in Iowa. We did this last year and it sold very fast. This year we plan to send twice as much. We are also . going to gather pine cones to paint and sell. We are also going to make corsages . to sell. We decided to have con tests every meeting. Refresh ments were served by Mavis and Mrs. Strom. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Rode. Duane Close, Reporter.
